About this deal

as someone who hasn't studied composition very thoroughly (and any great knowledge imparted by art classes years seems to have mostly fled), this is an extremely useful and elucidating volume. loved the many examples, and, for the most part, clear explanations. there were several instances where I foundered in the reading of some visual elements provided as additional delineations of space in examples with multiple scenes, and I feel those were important elements to miss. those broader explanations for camera placement apply as a knitting structure for the rest of the book's concepts. I also would have liked further or continued examples for some of them (perhaps mainly the ones with the unclear spatial direction?).

Framed Ink is an instructional book which mainly focuses on composition. You wont find topics on rendering or mediums. It doesn't have exercises, albeit one could imitate the panels to assimilate the techniques. Mateu presents an assortment of cinematic shots - with detailed breakdowns into shapes, values, lighting, lines of action, and the general holistic affect - that can be handy to anyone interested in visual storytelling viz. photography, animation, sequential art, storyboarding, and cinematography. He shows how we can create an immersive scene, through contrast and continuity. He goes over how varying the camera angles, perspective, and the width of lens can add to the drama. This book I find to be better because Mr. Mateu-Mestre not only is giving you the foundational principles for creating a great Graphic Novel. But also introduces so many great new ideas and ways of changing our thinking and perceptions in regard to the visual arts. The material is aimed at dramatic, even heroic characters and situations. This fits nicely with Hollywood movies and Marvel comics, but leaves a large gap if your characters or goals are different. (I can’t see Jimmy Corrigan or Ghost World or American Elf being created using this method.) The highly anticipated follow-up to Framed Ink from Marcos Mateu-Mestre, Framed Ink 2 provides insight into another compositional tool that Marcos uses every day to create his amazing artwork–the energy within the working frame. In each piece of art, regardless of its format, one must consider essential factors such as the push-pull, tension-relaxation, pressure-release, balance and imbalance that happen inside the working area to support our storytelling. All of these factors apply in any aspect ratio, whether it be horizontal, vertical or square, each a format to consider when working in the movie, gaming, animation and graphic novel industries, which in our day and age can be presented through a variety of outlets such as a movie theater, home theater, social media and a number of personal devices. Marcos encourages and educates us on how not to be limited by the format but to embrace and rise to the challenge of designing for each format. A perfect accompaniment to his prior releases Framed Ink, Framed Perspective Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 and Framed Drawing Techniques, this book will take a reader's knowledge base to the next level and allow them to build on their expertise as an effective visual storyteller. Format: El libro no es muy largo sin embargo cada página tiene información útil que absorber y el autor lo expresa de una manera clara con ejemplos dibujados. There are probably no other books around that covers composition with emphasis on storytelling as well as Framed Ink. This is a whole book devoted to the subject, as compared to other books (on storyboards) that usually have only one or two chapters. Over 200 beautifully illustrated examples are included. And they are really good examples. Just by looking at the examples alone, without even reading the commentary, you already get a good idea of what's happening.

So far this book has been everything I have been wanting, in an instructional guide, for creating Graphic Novels. I also have the books Writing and Illustrating the Graphic Novel and Foundations in Comic Book Art. When I am learning something I don't just want to learn the how to, but also the why's. The reasonings, the concepts, the underlining purposes. This way I can then adapt, alter and change these to suit my own needs. Mateu-Mastre's book is a very good complement to two other books I bought, both by James Gurney - who does take a more academic approach to instruction and whose art is detailed and vibrant. I wish I would've come across these guys when I first began art college. Marcos Mateu-Mestre has created an excellent learning tool here, especially if you are a novice or mid-level artist. I so highly recommend this book that I would go as far as to say that it is a must have in any artist's library who is interested in narrative art e.g. comics, graphic novels, storyboarding, illustration, concept art, etc... I am looking to become a Great Graphic Novelist and to do that I might as well learn from the best. From Masters. This is the essential how-to book for storytellers, or for anyone who needs to put images on screen or on paper. Although the illustrated examples are mainly movie composition, the techniques can be applied to animation, movies and even graphic novels. Every technique comes with a concise breakdown. You get to understand how and why shots are framed in a certain way, or how to create compositions to create a certain mood. There are also tips on lighting and continuity.
