Deaths due to coronavirus (COVID-19) compared with deaths from influenza and pneumonia, England and Wales: deaths occurring between 1 January and 31 August 2020

Like all of Katherine Anne Porter's fiction, Old Mortality leaves me somewhat puzzled. When I enter a Porter short story or novella, I immediately feel a fog or mist descend. It's an indicator of the kind of fog or mist that envelops the past, as well as the foggy or misty mind of the protagonist. Everything is in a muddle. I wait for the clearing, but generally I don't find it. Number of deaths involving the coronavirus (COVID-19) that occurred in each month in England and Wales, by country, age, sex and place of death. But something seemed to happen to their father's memory when he thought of the girls he had known in the family of his youth, and he declared steadfastly they had all been, in every generation without exception, as slim as reeds and graceful as sylphs.

I wotna if it's pillaging, or how ye ca't," said Cuddie, "but it comes natural to a body, and it's a profitable trade. Our folk had tirled the dead dragoons as bare as bawbees before we were loose amaist.—But when I saw the Whigs a' weel yokit by the lugs to Kettledrummle and the other chield, I set off at the lang trot on my ain errand and your honour's. Sae I took up the syke a wee bit, away to the right, where I saw the marks o'mony a horsefoot, and sure eneugh I cam to a place where there had been some clean leatherin', and a' the puir chields were lying there buskit wi' their claes just as they had put them on that morning—naebody had found out that pose o' carcages—and wha suld be in the midst thereof (as my mither says) but our auld acquaintance, Sergeant Bothwell?" I read this book as a teenager in the Seventies, and what I loved even better than the action, adventure, and romance was the striking similarities between the "culture war" of 17th century Scotland and the lingering bitterness in America at the end of the Vietnam era.

Robert Paterson (1716–1801), known as "Old Mortality", was a stonemason who took it upon himself to travel around lowland Scotland carving inscriptions for the unmarked graves of Covenanters martyred in the 17th century. Walter Scott made him a principal character in his novel Old Mortality (1816). [1] [2] Life [ edit ] Study for 'Old Mortality' by David Wilkie Ch. 3 (33): Henry is threatened with death by a group of Cameronians, including Macbriar and Habakkuk Meiklewrath. He is rescued by Claverhouse. Ch. 1: An assistant schoolmaster at Gandercleugh, Peter Pattieson, tells of his encounter with Old Mortality repairing Covenanters' gravestones, and of the stories he told that form the basis of the following narrative. Ch. 17 (30): With the agreement of the Covenanting council Henry meets Monmouth to explore possible peace terms; Monmouth puts an end to the discussion by demanding that the Covenanters lay down their arms before negotiations commence. Explores the problem of landlord, Pattieson, Cleishbotham, and editors as commentators upon the narrative. It will soon be a year since Napoleon, after the defeat at Waterloo, arrived as a prisoner in the remote island of “St Helena” after ten weeks at sea on board the HMS Northumberland. As a writer of historical novels and married to a French lady Sir Walter could only be interested by the Empereur’s story…

Old Mortality by Katherine Anne Porter is a short novel set in the South at the turn of the twentieth century. The narrative revolves around the impressions that two sisters, Maria and Miranda, gain from the family members around them. The novel then describes a wapenshaw held in 1679 by Lady Margaret Bellenden, life-rentrix of the barony of Tillietudlem. This was a show of her support for the Royalist cause, but most of her tenants favoured the opposing Covenanters (who wanted the re-establishment of presbyterianism in Scotland) and she has to enlist her unwilling servants. After her supporters are duly mustered, the main sport is a shoot at the popinjay in which the Cavalier favourite is narrowly defeated by Henry Morton, son of a Covenanter. He is introduced to Lady Margaret and her lovely granddaughter Edith Bellenden, with whom he is in love. This Thomas Paterson married Jane Murray, a grand-niece of the famous Dr. Alexander Murray, the linguist, and has issue a son Robert and a daughter. The novel is remarkably even-handed and keeps the reader's sympathies swinging between the Loyalists and Covenanters. Scott describes atrocities committed by both sides but also extraordinary acts of courage. There are outstanding portraits of two opposing leaders - Claverhouse, a cultured man who has become desensitized to extreme violence, and Burley, a Covenanter whose fanatical beliefs gradually turn him into a monster. The extreme Puritans among the Covenanter soldiers seem very similar to the modern Taliban.
