Before you start the game, each player must make the commitment on which horse will run in which race. I am extremely competitive, think monopoly for frustration and competitiveness and times that by 10, this game really did bring the worst out it me.

I can understand it, but I'm one of those players who doesn't mind when the game goes against me. It's not a three-hour mental marathon. You're betting on horses and trying to influence the odds, but there are no gurantees. It does come down to rolling well, but there is plenty of tension and plenty to do to complicate things for others or to help yourself. We haven't even played that often, but this game is a gem. There's also a Really Nasty Motorsports game and a Really Nasty Golf game, I've never seen either though.

How the horses are moved and dependant on what you throw on the dice, throw a 1, the horse moves 1 length, throw a 2, the horse moves 2 lengths forward, this is the same if a 3, 4, 5 or 6 is thrown. The game is played over the course of six races. Players have to rank their horses for each race, based on how well they want to perform. At the start of each race lane cards are drawn at random and odds for the horses are determined. Players then bet on the horse they think will win based on the odds. Therefore, a player may decide to bet on a horse which is not their own, if they feel it has better chances, or would win them more money. Overall, the Really Nasty Horse Racing Game from Rascals is a great family game – but, as the name suggests – it can get nasty, so you soon find out who your friends are! You start the game with a stable of horses numbered from one to six, with one being the fastest. During the race the players move their horses around the board, either trying to reach the finish line before the others or attempting to make sure the horse they bet on finishes first. How fast a horse moves depends on their grade, which is assigned at the beginning of the race and gives them a certain amount of leeway with dice roles, also giving players clues on who to bet on depending on the size of the stakes. Grades revolve with each subsequent race, so every horse gets to be the fastest horse at least once. Whilst the age range is 12 and over, I suggest being mindful at just how nasty, conniving, deceitful etc. people may get playing this game and if you are worried about upsetting any children playing, then you might not want the to join in. If like us, we did play with the grandchildren but did not play the nasty side of our strategies and was far less cunning. We wanted to the children to enjoy the game have some fun but also teach them about game plans and strategies without being too nasty or conniving. Each race is run over 1¼ laps of the circuit and eight fences. Players roll the die and move their dobbin the appropriate number of spaces. First to cross the finishing line wins the race. The rest then finish, the prize money is paid out and anyone who bet on the winner collects their winnings from the bank. However... each player has several cards in his/her hand which can be used to affect the outcome during the race (horse falls at fence) or even after (the dreaded Steward's Enquiry).

Despite (or because of?) the simple mechanics, the races are quite fun, with the possibility of card play adding a bit of needle. There's bound to be one person who will act as commentator, too. Winning races brings in some useful money, but it's winning the bets that really makes the difference - especially if you can get a winner at really long odds. This means that there's quite a strong bluff element, as players will not necessarily have bet on their own horse. I finally got to play this game yesterday on my daughter's birthday. She's into horses (what little girl isn't) and loves horse racing games. She's liked playing Winner's Circle in the past with her friends when they came over. She'd had this for awhile, but she hadn't read the rules...so I did it with her (after Barnes' latest Gameshark mentioned it again)
