About this deal

The easiest way to properly store the brushes is to buy a large bin holder (buy a bigger one to make sure it will fit all your brushes), like Brush Multi Bin with 49 openings. Keep learning about brushes techniques and characteristics in my next posts: Synthetic brushes are made with polyester or nylon. These have much softer bristles and when using them it is best to continuously rinse them while you work with your acrylic paints. This keeps them supple and in good condition for longer use. These bristles absorb more of the paint, making them more likely to stain. Thus, they are much harder to clean once the paint has dried. Start with either a container of solvent (a low-odour solvent like Shellsol T or Gamsol is really good) or of safflower oil (because it is slower drying than linseed oil so won’t dry/harden in a covered container for many months) to rinse as much oil colour out of the brush as you can. I like the JAS Deluxe Large Brush Washer as it gives you a perforated platform to rub the brush on and the colour falls through to under the platform leaving the liquid above cleaner – you aren’t just rubbing your brush around in gunk that makes it dirtier. In fact, for acrylic paint water and soap may not be enough for proper brush cleaning – there are many other products out there that are specialized for this.

When using acrylics the best thing to do is to clean as you go. Keeping some water or paint medium with you and using this when switching brushes will save you time and money on new brushes in the future. If you have left your acrylics to dry on your brushes, there are certain products you can use to remove them. Jakar Brush Tub with Palette Lid and Artists Brush Tub– These tubs are great for storing brushes, but also include wells for cleaning. Each well has ridges and raised areas that you can use to work paint residue out of your brush. One of the sections also has an angled wall that can be used to soak brushes. Watercolour brushes are delicate, and strong soap may damage the bristles by removing natural oils. Keep your water warm, but not hot, as hot water may cause any remaining paint to clot. Just because you have gotten into a habit now of cleaning your paintbrushes, doesn’t mean there aren’t some forgotten dried-out ones that may need cleaning and possibly reviving. In addition to your jar of water, you may want to have a jar with a small amount of rubbing alcohol or acetone on your desk as well. Both choices are great at stripping the paint from your bristles. Rubbing alcohol (aka isopropyl alcohol) can remove acrylic paint from all sorts of surfaces, including fabric. You can also use denatured alcohol if you have that on hand. Rubbing alcohol acts as a solvent when it touches acrylic paint.

Avoid twisting bristles while cleaning as this may damage them, don’t scrub too hard as this may also damage the bristles. Homemade fabric softener is extremely easy to make. You only need to mix 3 cups of baking soda with 2 cups of warm water! This will take several rounds of cleaning and rinsing, depending on how much paint clings to the brush bristles. Adhere to the following three standards of brush care and you’ll be well equipped with the knowledge to keep your prized materials in a state to produce stellar results. How to clean your brushes thoroughly and properly The Masters Brush Cleaner and Preserver is considered the best and most affordable acrylic brush cleaner for acrylic painting among pro artists who don’t use regular soap and water to clean brushes. Does acrylic paint wash off brushes with water? There are several types of acrylic brush cleaner options that I’ll explore below. For this step, you can use any of the solutions. Swirl your brush around in the cleaning fluid and then blot as much residue out as possible. Once you blot them you should be able to rinse and clean your brush using the steps above.

Traditionally there were two basic kinds of soap: solid soaps that use Sodium Hydroxide (lye) to turn the oil into soap and liquid soaps that use Potassium Hydroxide (potash) to change the oil into soap. Currently most commercial soaps use many other cheaper ingredients instead. This will also prevent paint buildup on your bristles which makes them harder to clean if left to dry.Pour a small amount of white vinegar and rub it into the bristles in a circular motion, until most of the paint is dissolved (might need more than one rinse). The most important thing to remember about caring for your acrylic brushes is not to let paint dry after you’ve used it. The paint is not soluble in this state and will produce a plastic-like dried texture. So be sure to wash your acrylic brushes immediately after use. If you cannot wash acrylic brushes while painting, leave them in water, at the very least, during your practice. How to reshape, dry and store your brushes properly Apart from how often you clean your paintbrushes, it is also important how you store them. You should not just put a wet brush in a jar or container as the bristles will start drying out and can even break off with time. Brush pots including the Faber-Castell Clic & Go Water Pot, Lantern Water Pot and Non-Spill Paint Pot. These paint pots are great for taking to classes or painting trips if you don’t want to carry around glass jars. The Trio Water Pot is particularly popular as it allows you to keep three lots of water – so there will surely be some clean water for your final rinse! There are a few ways to do this. The most effective solution for cleaning acrylic brushes is using a painting medium or brush cleaner. If you do not have one then using things like rubbing alcohol, acetone or even some soap and water would help.
