Unfortunately, with the cast so large, I felt like I didn't really get to fall in love with all of them enough. The casts' relationships with Walter were explored in depth and, strictly by association, with each other, to a point. But when it came time to really feel something for a couple of them, they were still too much removed to feel what needed to be felt for the story to slap me around like it should have. I appreciated the diverse representation amongst the characters. That said, for being a diverse group they were all pretty similar. With the exception of Ryan, everyone in this group is in their 30s, educated, and established in their careers. Yet not one of these people have any children? That's pretty convenient. It's also feels like a missed opportunity. Separating a character from their child would have added another level of horror to the story and helped with the moral and ethical debate the story seems to want readers to be pondering. The closest we ever got to that was Molly mourning her husband Cam. Intrepid Reporter: Sam 'the Reporter' is the one most determined to solve the mystery of the House and its separation from the world. all abstractions, all generalizations, treat words and images and people and thoughts as units existing in some matrix of comparison. the doctor, the pianist, the politico, the artist(s), etc. et al, all the participants in this study taking place in a nice house on the lake... all treat the story as substance. all treat their own selves as having some substance, a genuine identity, rather than a label or title to be fulfilled. all attempt to communicate. all fail. their last communication, for now, for when, is a bullet. it fails. but that was the plan all along, to fail. to fail is to keep living? Batman Gambit: It's revealed in the final issue of Cycle One that the plan to make the housemates ultimately accept their situation in the house isn't Walter's at all; it's Norah's, and she devised it based on her ability to predict how the group would react to the situation, and what scenarios would lead them to a path of ultimate acceptance. Walter is initially hesitant to use her plan, but after his own attempts to get them on board utterly fail (which Norah also predicted), he agrees to try it her way. And it works.

I was really excited to try this horror/scifi graphic novel. I saw the art was amazing and was so excited to get super creeped out. Unfortunately I was let down in almost all areas.I'm not saying the ending was horrible, because it wasn't, and they were smart enough to roll an emotional subplot through it. Shout-Out: In Issue 4, David is wearing Ferris Bueller's Iconic Outfit, having apparently requested it from Walter via the notepad.

Human Aliens: Walter talks about what his "people" are going to do to the planet, but he appears entirely human. When Norah tries to kill him with a fire poker, however, she slices through his head, but it appears to completely replace itself within seconds. Driven to Suicide: The guests can request items from Walter by writing on a notepad. Molly requests a gun, a rope and then a straight razor when her requests for her husband and parents alive and well aren't granted. Walter repeatedly refuses these requests, until David gets the razor for her by asking for it on his own notepad. Although it turns out they can't actually die, so it doesn't matter whether she gets the razor or not. Reality Warper: The interface that Walter uses to control the house and everything in it seems to be capable of this, able to conjure practically anything the housemates want, construct entire buildings, and bestow a Healing Factor upon them as well as selectively remove or restore memories. It's limitations haven't yet been shown, but it's undeniably a powerful piece of tech. Ryan Cane is a 26-year-old artist living in New York City alongside her circle of friends. Unfortunately, he fell into the same trap of having set up something so large, so earthshaking, that he had to come up with an explanation-heavy and over-complicated plot device to bring it to a (sort of) ending.Coming out in 2021, it was interesting to see the pandemic briefly alluded to, though reading it in 2023 it was difficult to not compare the opening of the book to the film Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery as both have an extremely similar, mysterious set-up (and oddly both have someone working on a Democratic Party campaign). There are A LOT of characters, but this guide came in handy: One of the social media posters says his brother was on Twitch when his eyeballs melted. Another mentions that her skin is coming off on her phone screen as she types.
