At most distances useful for camera trapping (usually not more than 50ft away), the above cameras will detect this every time. However, we find that the Bushnell (on High Sensitivity) can detect at bigger distances (+60ft) slightly more reliably that the others here. At those distances, its not going to be a great capture however! Note that if you want good night-time videos, you may be better off looking at the Browning cameras! Daytime photos are clear and colourful, offering great detail. Night time are good and the new LEDs really help here to freeze motion better. The Browning Recon Force Edge is a great value wildlife camera with impressive video quality. It's the next version along from the Recon Force Advantage, which has been incredibly popular before it was discontinued, and a step below the most recent Recon Force Elite HP5. If this camera were to take 35-day and 35-night pictures every 24 hours, the Recon Force 4K outdoor camera would last 18.2 months in the field on a set of 8 AA Lithium Batteries. For a Browning trail cam using 8 batteries, we consider this to be elite.
They are also noticeable sturdier and the build quality has improved too – with better seals around the battery door, better battery eject mechanism and improved button layout.The super-narrow 41 degrees field-of-view makes this camera ideal for large open spaces but would not work for tight spaces.
If you're like most of my clients you know a little about trail cameras and the way they work, but the varied choices available are a little confusing, to say the least! It has a memory card slot onboard which is capable of accommodating cards with up to half a terabyte of space, so if you have a spare 512GB SD card to hand or you are eager to invest in one, it can be kitted out with ample room for months and months of media.

In the past, many people get confused with the megapixel rating trail camera manufacturers advertise. Companies inflate the mpxl rating to attract eyes to their products. They do this through interpolation, which digitally adds megapixels to a photo without actually improving the picture. The HP5 also offers some great new features, including SMART IR Video Recording, HDR technology, and battery type setting options. The Recon Force Edge also updates some of the menu options; the sensitivity of the camera can be raised and lowered more easily, and there is the popular option to set an operation time allowing you to tell the camera to be active only at a certain point over 24 hours - avoiding the dogs, or when you're cutting the grass for example. We generally use the camera on the High resolution – the quality isn’t really much different, and at 30fps is still very smooth – just to help with the file sizes. If you were to take the SD card out of the camera without disabling the SD card encryption (by inputting your pin), the SD card is simply completely unreadable and unaccessible when put into a computer etc – meaning no one else can access the files if stolen.
This camera is very easy to use and produces good images and videos, though not nearly as good as the Browning cameras (the Mini 30 suffers from movement blur). And it's only 12.5 x 8 x 5.5 cm! Note that deployment times are not as good as other cameras, as it only holds four batteries (unless you use an external power supply). The screen is required for changing the settings, but if you have multiple cameras you'll only need one screen.When you have the setup files you require on the SD card, simply put the SD card into your camera and switch to Test. You should see the Update text flash briefly on the screen for each setup file on the card. For the same money, the Browning Spec Ops Elite HP5 is another excellent option, though with a slightly narrower field of view of 41 degrees! This is particularly useful if you’re worried about theft or the data is sensitive. It’s simple to active too, and will be available on all Spec Ops Edge trail cameras via a free, simple firmware update.
