About this deal

Others allege that this story is fiction. As modern tellings would have it, this “tradition” was actually fabricated in the 1940s as a clever marketing ploy to distinguish certain mezcals on the shelf. The thing is, there is a barrier on the road leading to the entrance, so neither cars nor tour vans can get in. While they are waiting in the queue, the bus drives around them and gets you to the entrance as the first ones. Kowalewski, Stephen A.; Feinman, G.; Finsten, L.; Blanton, R.; Nicholas, L. (1989). "Monte Albán's Hinterland, Part II: The Prehispanic Settlement Patterns in Tlacolula, Etla and Ocotlán, the Valley of Oaxaca, Mexico". University of Michigan, Ann Arbor Museum of Anthropology Memoir 23. 23. Rumors surrounding these little critters’ origin, taste and even their supposed hallucinogenic properties have swirled around for years. Here are a few commonly asked questions about these wiggly oddities. What is a Tequila Worm? Symmetry was not a major concern for the layout of Monte Albán plaza. Although the angles within the plaza are not perfect 90-degree corners, the plaza appears to be a rectangle without actually being so. The structures are not laid out in a symmetrical fashion, as the distances between the structures vary greatly from building to building. Construction methods used for orientation changed as Monte Albán expanded. Early structures, on the western side of the plaza, are rotated south of east, while later structures align more with the cardinal directions.

Tequila is made with rigid standards. For starters, tequila can only be produced from blue agave, while mezcal can be made from 28 varieties of agave. If you’ve ever seen a tequila worm resting at the bottom of a bottle on the shelf, you’ve probably wondered what this bizarre garnish is doing inside a drink.Answers as to why the worm is in the bottle in the first place is actually unknown, but there are stories. Some will say that the worm in the mezcal bottle is a marketing ploy. After all, think of all those myths we just had to bust to get to this point. Hallucinogen, flavor enhancer, boozy addition…the worm is none of that. But when the worm is in the bottle on a shelf, it somehow convinces people to buy that brand. I’m J Highland, and for over 30 years, I’ve been deeply immersed in the captivating world of Tequila, Mezcal, and other agave spirits. If you insist on drinking it out of curiosity or for a prank, do it in shots finishing it as fast as you can.

However, if you’re adamant about trying one, Santo Gusano is relatively better than others in that category. Is Monte Alban a real Mezcal? The insights I’ve gained aren’t just from books or hearsay; they are the result of hands-on experience, countless tastings, and an enduring passion for these spirits. Our friends took a tour a couple of weeks before we went to Monte Albán. They were told it’s not possible to get there on their own, only 400 people a day, 100 people at one time are allowed in (Covid rules), and because of that, it’s necessary to get there early to be able to make it. The coolest thing is that it is located at an altitude of 1940 meters, 400 meters above the valley, where the city is located. That could only mean one thing – amazing views! Here, I’m not just sharing opinions; I’m weaving tales from the rich tapestry of my experiences over these three decades.

Turns out, you’ve been misled. Yes, tequila worms are real. And yes, you can still find them in bottles. There are a couple of things you need to know, though. Hutson, Scott (2002). Were they not preserved as alcoholic garnishes, the caterpillars would flourish into the tequila giant-skipper butterfly or the comadia redtenbacheri moth respectively. Monte Alban seems to contain traces of agave overshadowed by chemical compounds, which I strongly advise avoiding at all costs. These very same breeds of agave worms are known to feed on peyote cactus, from which the psychedelic drug mescaline is refined.

The first misconception surrounding these bugs is in their name. They actually aren’t worms at all. If you are interested in eating the tequila worm (ahem… mezcal worm), there is no need to worry, as it’s relatively safe to consume… unless you have a moth allergy! Maybe best to leave worm-eating to the birds?Whether you’re a seasoned enthusiast or just dipping your toes into this world, I invite you to join me as we explore the fascinating realm of these legendary spirits. My education and training include a thorough knowledge of agave spirits creation from planting agaves to bottling, including distillation. Suffice it to say, those are not the worms you will be finding in your mezcal. Why do Distillers Put Tequila Worms in Mezcal? The General Wine Company sources wines from all over the world, but with a particular focus on small, independent producers. The company's buyers travel extensively to meet with winemakers and taste their wines, ensuring that they only offer the best of the best. Marcus, Joyce (1983). Flannery, K.V.; Marcus, J. (eds.).
