About this deal

There’s no one-size-fits-all solution, and the boat owner who finds gratification in the wet, glossy look of a two-part varnish borne of painstaking preparation and careful application will weigh our test data much differently than the one who regards brightwork maintenance as a masochistic endeavor.

Masking tape – use a high-quality masking tape that removes cleanly to protect non-varnished surfaces. Do not breathe gas, spray, mist, dust, fumes and vapors as these could damage your lungs and may cause other illnesses. After sanding, and before applying the next coat, wipe with a lint-free rag coated in mineral spirits to remove dust, and allow the solvent to flash.Unlike the many UV-resistant offerings on this list, Miniwax Helmsman is not very UV-resistant and therefore is not recommended outdoors.

Bottom line: We applaud VNC’s efforts to offer a “green” wood finish—and their creative recycling of dairy industry “trash”—but we can’t recommend it over Cetol for an exterior coating in the marine environment. But, it is still quite imperative to check out the formulation of the varnish you are eyeing to purchase because some marine varnish products are not that adept when it comes to drying faster, sticking well and in providing the best possible shield for your vessel. For glossy brightwork that’s easier to maintain, just apply the gloss finish over the natural teak or satin finishes. Finally, this product can be labeled as one of the most outstanding exterior varnishes sold on the market to date.

They can be used on all types of wood, not just teak and mahogany, to bring out the unique tones in each. Polyurethanes are available as both one-pot and two-pot products, the latter giving a harder coating and faster cure, which allows multiple coats to be applied in one day. There are modern one- and two-part formulas, with the two-part formulas offering the best UV and abrasion resistance. Practical Sailor often supplements panel testing with product challenges aboard our test boats to see whether top products still earn their keep in the real world and to try out new products. It does so by sealing the wood with a somewhat hard, yet flexible, clear protective barrier that can last up to three years of UV and element exposure in temperate climates for the most durable two-part product formulations.

Their chemical cousins, however, like Cetol, have proven they can offer good protection with only annual nurturing and the occasional touchup. If you need to save the varnish overnight, take a look at this top tip on preserving two-part varnish in the fridge. A slow growing tree found in Indonesian rainforests, it is a wood that is impervious to changes in moisture levels, heat and humidity, welcome news with the changeable British weather. These cracks are a part of the teaks natural weathering process, which also sees the wood change colour from a golden, honey hue to a lovely silvery grey as it ages.

The test was designed as an endurance test, a fight to the finish, so we have not done any maintenance coats or touch-ups to the test panels. Hence for high traffic areas like cabin soles, a two-part polyurethane product cannot be beat for longevity and durability. Because we’ve not yet tested the reformulated Perfection, the top pick honors go to Nautikings Nautithane.
