About this deal

The name was revived in 2006 in a plan that involved the malt of three distilleries, combined to create a single malt super-brand that could challenge the likes of Glenlivet and Glenfiddich for sales. Dufftown was chosen along with Glendullan and Glen Ord. The Singleton of Glen Ord was originally earmarked for Asia, while Glendullan was destined for the US and Canada. The Singleton of Dufftown, meanwhile, remained in Europe. Today, however, all three brands are available worldwide in an attempt to boost sales. So far, it’s been working. The Singleton regularly resides among the top five best selling single malt brands in the world. As expected, the "Luscious Nectar" smells malty-sweet, fruity, slightly honeyed perhaps and very soft. Other aromas we detect are nuts and latte, as well as green apple. Really pleasant. Taste The Singleton name was first applied to the single malt from Auchroisk in 1986 after the distillery was deemed too difficult to pronounce. When Auchroisk was later added to Diageo’s Flora & Fauna series, however, “The Singleton” was dropped. Thoughts: It’s perhaps not the most complex whisky I’ve ever come across but I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. I had a similar reaction when I first came across Cragganmore. I expected a delicate dram in the style of Glenlivet but found something more robust, instead. As much as people sometimes like to portray Diageo as the Evil Empire, they really know what they’re doing when it comes to bottling single malt Scotch whisky. This is a Speyside I can get on board with. Fully flavoured and very satisfying.

Singleton Whisky (1 x 750 ml) Mood Someone’s in a Makro The Singleton Whisky (1 x 750 ml) Mood

Smell: Lots of classic Speyside fruits at first. There’s apple, pear and citrus – both orange and lemon. Aromatic cinnamon spice. Hobnob biscuits. My high school woodwork classroom! Caramel and honeycomb. Perhaps a touch of peach. There is no reason to spend money on this 12-year-old, and no reason to drink it. It is inoffensive and clinical, alcohol in distilled water, like from a lab. The tiniest trace of flavour; zero personality of any kind. Palate: medium to full bodied and quite cloying. In a sense I want to describe it as rich but I'm reminded of a cut-price supermarket dessert which has chemicals and compounds added to simulate richness. It feels smooth and full bodied but in an overly engineered and synthetic way. It's as though the brief was to come up with something deep, rich, smooth and easy drinking. The results are successful but ultimately rather unsatisfying. This feels forced. I'm not enjoying it one bit. I have read – and I’m not sure I believe this – that The Singleton was recently the fifth best-selling brand of single malt scotch in the world. News to me.The unique bottle shape of bottle is inspired by a traditional hipflask while the colour of the glass reflects the blue flint glass used at the turn of the previous century. I like the bottle! Fill a highball glass with cubed ice. Add The Singleton and stir over ice for five seconds. Add soda and gently stir for three seconds. Garnish with a fresh slice of orange. The town housed seven distilleries at one time. Such density of distillation inspired the slogan “Rome was built on seven hills but Dufftown stands on seven stills”. The seven were Mortlach, Glenfiddich, Balvenie, Convalmore, Parkmore, Glendullan and Dufftown itself. Thin, delicate and oily, the whisky floats in the mouth and tingles a little on the tongue. The fruitiness is pronounced here, as well. The apple in particular stands out. Orange toffee, roasted nuts and brown sugar round off the less complex but quaffable single malt. Every now and then, the alcohol bites a little, despite the low 40% abv. Finish Don’t get me wrong, this is not bad but it is certainly not good either, it’s just bland (I think you get the message). It’s as flat as the bottle it comes in.

The Singleton Of Dufftown 12 Year Old - How good is it?

Finish: Quite long but that’s not a good thing as again a great void of nothing overwhelms you. I was immediately opening my cabinet to find something more interesting (not difficult) to replace it with. This cookie is set by Rubicon Project to control synchronization of user identification and exchange of user data between various ad services. On the palate lots of malt some wood and a bit of sherry but nothing exciting happens after that. It has no legs so to speak. Nose: One reviewer rather pejoratively commented that it was like 'chewing a handful pencil-shavings with marshmallows' and although this is somewhat OTT, the nose does remind me of pencil-shavings. It's certainly very woody with perhaps a hint of sweet hay and malt. There's a touch more sweetness coming through with the addition of a tiny amount of water. Full disclosure: This sample was included in an advent calendar which I was sent for free. As always, I will strive to give an honest opinion on the quality of the dram and the value for money it represents. Nose: Bubble gum. Dense fruit punch aromas, Red Vines, and a hint of anise. A rest in the glass neither adds nor removes anything from the equation. The nose is very unobtrusive, pleasantly sweet and fresh with a taste which is velvety soft, almost sweet.
