About this deal

Sung by a young Nick Cave in 1979 and written by Rowland S Howard (guitarist for Cave’s first band The Boys Next Door, later The Birthday Party) at the age of 16, ‘Shivers’ was meant as a tongue-in-cheek dig at overblown teen angst. This song hit me at the perfect time in life, and seemed to capture a kind of ineffable melancholy that went beyond the girl I was pining over, and was instead an essential part of the human experience.

Elvis Costello wrote the lyrics for this poignant reaction to the Falklands War of 1982, but though Ol’ Dec’s own version is fantastic in itself, it’s Wyatt’s strained vocal that lifts this from heartfelt to gut-wrenchingly beautiful. Williams originally intended the lyrics to be spoken rather than sung, which would have been a crime when you consider how gutting it is to hear his voice sway and crack through, “And as I wonder where you are/ I’m so lonesome I could cry. This song leans a little harder on the angsty side of things, but it’s a lament-filled breakup song nonetheless. And the only conclusion is a chorus of angels whose weeping turns into something like joy as a triumphant trumpet kicks in. On top of this, the track soothed our angsty souls as we found ourselves, once again, in the midst of lockdown.A relationship full of resentment, as the bedroom has turned cold and all his failings have been exposed, is something to mourn, and everything about this song super-charges that mopey feeling.

Bandmate, Roger Waters wrote Wish You Were Here for his unwell bandmate and created a classic song of loss and regret. With an equally evocative title, Makarska Sunset, 25th May 2018 is another instrumental, this time featuring a lone, almost classical piano melody for its brief running time of just under a minute. Ducking the obvious (‘Love Will Tear Us Apart’) and the totally harrowing (‘New Dawn Fades’), we’ve picked ‘Isolation’ for its chilly synths, peppy bassline and urgent sense of desperation: ‘Mother, please try to believe me/I’m doing the best that I can/I’m ashamed of the things I’ve been put through/I’m ashamed of the person I am.Ever been stuck in a temp job spending your working hours constantly picking over everything that you’ve done wrong in your life? Her personal battles against addiction and a messy personal life have overtaken the fragile nature of her writing and lyrics. Those Spanish boots are the death knell to their relationship and a potent symbol of a horribly broken heart. But the late Sinéad O’Connor’s version dialled the sad factor to 11, channeling the singer’s very real grief from the death of her mother five years previously.

Coupled with a mournful earworm of a vocal hook (later sampled by Wu-Tang Clan) and some muted Booker T organ work, that was all the late Wendy René needed to record this tragic classic. It would take immense courage to share this story so full of dreams, hopes, love, reality, disappointment, courage, pain, heartbreakk, honesty, determination, acceptance, and more.Damon Albarn was locked in to sensitive mode for this one, stripping away all the beery bravado for a long and hard look at the end of his relationship with Justine Frischmann. The singer only really lashes out once or twice –‘my brother, my killer’ (ouch) — and saves the bite in his voice for the sign-off: ‘Sincerely, L Cohen. Like most of Jeff Mangum’s work, there are times when you have to put in some effort to parse the expressionistic imagery (“blister please with those wings in your spine…how he’d love to find your tongue in his teeth”) but at other times, the emotion is plain and jarring. However, if you’re looking for a raw, humorous (and a little naughty) inside look at what I went through as a mom raising a mentally ill son, then grab a glass of wine and get comfy. She retired from music three years later, turning to religion after the sudden death of her friend and Stax labelmate Otis Redding.
