Sung by a young Nick Cave in 1979 and written by Rowland S Howard (guitarist for Cave’s first band The Boys Next Door, later The Birthday Party) at the age of 16, ‘Shivers’ was meant as a tongue-in-cheek dig at overblown teen angst. This song hit me at the perfect time in life, and seemed to capture a kind of ineffable melancholy that went beyond the girl I was pining over, and was instead an essential part of the human experience.

This song leans a little harder on the angsty side of things, but it’s a lament-filled breakup song nonetheless. And the only conclusion is a chorus of angels whose weeping turns into something like joy as a triumphant trumpet kicks in. On top of this, the track soothed our angsty souls as we found ourselves, once again, in the midst of lockdown.A relationship full of resentment, as the bedroom has turned cold and all his failings have been exposed, is something to mourn, and everything about this song super-charges that mopey feeling.

Bandmate, Roger Waters wrote Wish You Were Here for his unwell bandmate and created a classic song of loss and regret.
