Sure, it has some caveats in the image quality department. Most notably, corner sharpness isn't stellar at telephoto while wide-open; close-up telephoto shots wide open can have a soft dreamy look , and it's also quite prone to cat's eye bokeh effect. But honestly, depending on your subjects, those may not be major concerns for you. And image quality is otherwise solid, with very good sharpness across much of the focal range, pleasing bokeh, and good resistance to aberrations and ghosting. If there’s something to complain about, it’s the vignette at f/1.2, which is significant enough to negate some of that light-gathering power of the wide aperture. The Sigma 28-70mm F2.8 DG DN Contemporary ships with a plastic petal-shaped lens hood (LH706-01) that twists into place, but there's no soft case included as with the more expensive Art version. Focal Range The Sigma 28-70mm f/2.8 DG DN is a very sensible option for a mid-range zoom. It’s a fairly unique focal length with only a few alternatives that match. Sony makes the 28-70mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS lens which is around half the price of the Sigma, but it is a variable aperture combined with a smaller base aperture which will turn many people off to it.Optically, the Sigma 14-24mm f/2.8 DN Art delivers no surprises, living up to the high bar set by other Art-series lenses. Sharpness is solid and chromatic aberration is minor. The distortion that’s near impossible to eliminate at such a wide-angle is subtle and easy to correct in post, with a vignette that’s also easy to remove either in post or by stopping down past f/4.

The 28-70mm f2.8 DG DN Contemporary lens is superb because it is so versatile. This is a lens that has the optics to deliver you professional quality results yet at the same time, it’s small and light enough that you can use it for more casual activities like taking it on vacation or outings with friends. It also has the focal length range that is great for all types of photography, and a large enough maximum aperture that can help you be more creative, and give you more flexibility in different conditions. Honestly, this is the type of lens that we need more of in the L mount system, and I’m very happy to see Sigma coming out with them. If you’re trying to build a compact system, and are currently looking for lenses that not only are optically exceptional but also compact and versatile, this zoom should definitely be on your list of lenses to consider. Design-wise, the lens is weather-sealed and also uses water repellent coatings at the front and rear glass. It’s a bit of a beast to carry around, though, at 2.5 pounds. This was taken somewhere in Chinatown using the fp L, and the 70mm focal length. The settings were 200 ISO and f8. The Sigma 28-70mm for Sony lens features a rounded 9 blade diaphragm which creates an attractive blur to the out of focus areas of the image. Cat's eye effect is quite noticeable when shooting wide-open and can appear quite a long way towards the center of the image frame.The fp L has its quirks but it’s kind of Sigma’s style in a way :). They’ve always made cameras that were a bit different. I look at the big picture, and this is a full frame camera with 61 megapixels that is extremely compact. There will be some compromises because it’s tiny. But with good lenses, the image quality is pretty phenomenal. It doesn't hurt that it's also among the most affordable F2.8 full-frame standard zoom options for the E- or L-mounts. For the size, weight and cost-conscious, it's definitely worthy of consideration. In addition to prioritizing portability, SIGMA’s optical engineers introduced a new combination of coatings and structural elements that make this standard zoom well-equipped for use in a wide range of shooting environments. Likewise, the latest production and manufacturing techniques were employed to ensure exceptionally high build quality. There’s no getting around the fact that that red dot logo means the lens costs more than some used cars. And while it manages to do the seemingly impossible and offer prime-like image quality in a zoom, few will want to drop that much cash on a lens, especially now that the L-Mount alliance means there are more options than ever before.
