About this deal

Disapproving of the marriage, the prince’s family wants to eliminate every trace that she ever existed. It is a poignant and also an hilarious episode; conjuring up the sort of odd juxtaposition of emotions in the reader at which Charles Dickens himself excelled.

Dodger by Terry Pratchett – review | Terry Pratchett | The

I too found it to be a romp of a read, which cleverly manages to succeed as a droll and witty adventure story, whether or not the reader has read anything by Charles Dickens. Others say that it does not have any tension or suspense; or that that the reason for the danger is too vague … Some of the objections are such polar opposites that I scratched my head wondering if they applied to the same book. Parents need to know that 2013 Printz Honor Book Dodger is a clever, fast-moving, funny, and suspenseful historical adventure set in the streets and sewers of Victorian London. When Dodger witnesses this, all his protective instincts and indignation rise to the fore, and when the young lady appeals to him he takes on the pair singlehandedly.

Dodger takes place in London during the reign of Queen Victoria, focusing on a time when the majority of inhabitants were poverty stricken. Told with wit and vigour, this is an enormously entertaining story full of dry humour and with plenty of jokes to tickle fans of Dickens. Finally, there are Solomon's references to a fellow Jew he traveled with around Europe avoiding murder, whose zeal for equality of class he quite admired. The girl, known only as Simplicity, has escaped the torment of her loveless marriage to an unknown nobleman "from one of the Germanys", but she remains in mortal peril.

As Dodger's triumphant path ultimately brings him honour from the very highest rank of society, we cannot help but cheer not only for his success, but also for the success of this ebullient, funny and delightful novel. Add in a lively set of support characters, funny dialogue, great action, and finish it all off with Dodger, one of the most lovable characters that I have read about. This was nicely shown by the dialogue that followed, which helped to again emphasize the early 1800’s setting. Yet somehow, a book emerged, in which the angel Aziraphale and the demon Crowley got together to head off the end times, and in which lastingly important thoughts were set down about witches, prophecies, the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse and pets. According to the author's afterword, the story is set "broadly in the first quarter of Queen Victoria's reign", which would be between 1837 and 1853.Mister Dodger is so sharp that one day his name will be known on every continent, possibly as the benefactor of mankind, but also quite possibly as the most charming scoundrel ever to be hanged! Alongside famous literary characters like Charles Dickens and Sweeney Todd, Dodger unravels a conspiracy involving political reform, social justice, and a secret society. While getting his hair trimmed to impress his new love interest, Dodger’s barber, Sweeney Todd, goes a little crazy. There's also the added benefit of seeing Victorian London through Dodger's eyes, and while Pratchett romanticizes it somewhat, he obviously knows the time period well. About two pages in, I realized he was actually mimicking Victorian prose, which is a lot different than his usual breezy style of writing.

It will take every bit of Dodger's street wisdom -- plus assistance from the likes of politician Benjamin Disraeli and London police founder Robert Peel -- to effect a permanent solution that will save Simplicity's neck and not plunge England into war. Retired Badass: As his ridiculously over-the-top backstory is steadily revealed, it becomes apparent that Solomon is this. Or, possibly, I suggest, a street urchin with a surfeit of animal cunning and the luck of Beelzebub himself. Along the way he’ll befriend Charles Dickens, outwit Sweeny Todd and reach the giddy heights of Victorian society.

Solomon's past is alluded several times in the novel, such as fleeing Russia from persecution and travelling the world afterwards. Dodger is set in the streets and sewers of Victorian London, and many of the characters, including the narrator, speak with a vulgar bluntness. Just to be clear: there were no actual bodies in need of burying during my more than 20 years of working with Terry Pratchett.
