About this deal

Rainbow Fish finds the wise octopus’s cave. At first, he can’t see in the gloom, but her bright eyes emerge. The octopus says that she has been waiting for Rainbow Fish after hearing his story from the waves. As a solution to his problem, she proposes that Rainbow Fish give one of his scales to each of the other fish. If he does this, the octopus thinks he will have learned how to be happy. The story includes lots of different types of punctuation. Can you find each type and explain why they have been used?

This is the first in a series of blogs taking a look at our selected books, what makes them so wonderful, and what activities you can do to explore the books in your classroom. The Rainbow Fish by Marcus Pfister Last week we announced our World Book Day 2020 selection for both our Bringing Books to Life dance workshops and our Story Explorer drama workshops. However, he didn't seem to take to them as much as I thought he would...so I decided to find something else as informative, well-balanced and fun to read with my child. It works okay, I suppose, if your special thing is a great talent for playing the violin—yes, please do share your talent with the world (but no pressure)! But for people whose special thing is not as easily shareable, like being book-smart (or “gifted” as they like to use in education), you might be better off hiding it, unless you want to do everyone’s homework for them. The book offers a number of philosophical topics for discussion. First and foremost, it raises the idea of sharing. Sharing is a topic that is foremost in children’s minds. Here they will be asked to consider: why people can be reluctant to share, the relationship between sharing and happiness, when it is okay to share and when it is okay not to share, and the role of sharing among friends. What child doesn't like putting their hands in paint? Just as easy as it looks, uses your preschooler's hand as the body for the fish. Add a googly eye and some bubbles and you've got a cute fish craft to go with the rainbow fish story. Rainbow Fish is children's picture book, first published 1992, and has been a worldwide success. It is the universal message at the heart of this simple story about a beautiful fish, who learns to make friends by sharing his most prized possessions, that gives the book its lasting value.

Soon enough, all the other fish are gathered around and clamoring for their own cut of the Rainbow Fish’s scales. (Seriously, what is wrong with these fish?) It’s a total frenzy. And Rainbow Fish is just taking it as he “share[s] his scales left and right.” Wow. You know that surprised Pikachu meme? That’s my face right now. But still... something just feels off. Sharing is all well and good, and we encourage our kids to share and play nicely - but that's not what happens here. The little blue fish asks for one of the rainbow fishes shiny scales, and when he refuses to give away his beloved scales, all the other fish ostracise him... and that's OK? If the story was about a rainbow fish who voluntarily decided to donate his scales to enrich the lives of his friends, I'd be well on-board with that. But he only does it to make the other fish like him... and that's not what we want to teach our kids.

I have been expecting you,\" said the octopus in a deep voice. “ Listen to my advice: give every fish one of your glittering scales. Then you may not be the most beautiful fish in the ocean, but you will be happy again.\" Rainbow Fish had one of its shiny scales fall off and it fell into the deep sea. A place where no fish go. Due to determination Rainbow fish went after it until he lost sight of scale. He meets and works with other animals that reside within the sea for him to find the missing scale. My family and I love the illustrations in The Rainbow Fish and His Friends. We own the Rainbow Fish and enjoy it, so it was fun to read about other adventures and characters. Having a few stories in one book is a great idea.

Since the majority of the population knows the story of The rainbow fish I will not touch on that story. Fantastic Underwater World" shows an illustration of the ocean bottom with its colorful plant life. I can see and somewhat appreciate some people's problem with the book as being a sort of socialist piece of propaganda that uniqueness is unacceptable and everyone must be brought down to the same level. First off, I was SO excited to get an advanced copy of this book. Thank you NetGalley! As an educator.
