About this deal

The Glanton gang segments are based on Samuel Chamberlain's account of the group in his memoir My Confession: The Recollections of a Rogue. Chamberlain rode with John Joel Glanton and his company between 1849 and 1850. Judge Holden is described in Chamberlain's account but is otherwise unknown. Chamberlain writes: I find the novel to be a pretentious, nearly-unreadable pastiche hybrid of every writer from Ernest Hemingway, to H.P. Lovecraft, to Norman Mailer.

Blood Meridian has been on my to read list for well over a decade because, quite honestly, I sensed it was not my cup of tea.

Someone wrote that there is a Yale professor that put the book down twice and finally finished it. He now teaches it in his classroom. Perhaps he was the person that said that this was the most evil book written. I don't believe so. I know of a book that is much more evil.

So its an anomic existential tale with no character development or revelation. We just gotta find new ways to kill or be killed in ever more remorseless graphic detail.a b Mitchell, L. C. (2015) ‘A Book "Made Out of Books": The Humanizing Violence of Style in "Blood Meridian"’, Texas studies in literature and language, 57(3), pp. 259–281. doi: 10.7560/TSLL57301. But God would soon send a divine judge and conqueror to sweep away these powers in a cosmic battle that would institute a heavenly kingdom on Earth. Early Christians believed this divine conqueror would be a returned Jesus. Sepich, John (2008). Notes on Blood Meridian. Southwestern Writers Collection Series. Foreword by Edwin T. It’s okay until “some reeking issue of the incarnate dam of war herself.” Then it’s just portentous empty gesturing. You could read that phrase in an early Marvel comic.
