About this deal

Your age, weight, height and gender will all be collected here, but you can also enter these into the watch directly. For a flat 5k this doesn’t make a difference, but you can imagine courses beginning with large climbs for example, and it would be disheartening to feel like you can’t catch up. The nature of sport watches is that many of them evolve over time via firmware updates and changes to the accompanying mobile apps and web apps. There’s no true display, just some LEDs that show you how much you’ve progressed toward your daily goal.

Like the Nike Sportswatch, there’s vibration alerts if you run with music to prompt you on your progress. Still, all of the aforementioned features, plus a seven day battery, slim design, full sleep tracking, and the outstanding Fitbit app make the Fitbit Surge an outstanding top of the line tracker. If you want a low-end running-only watch then, in my opinion, the Polar M400 stands out as the winner with a good web data platform for runners. And, its smart coaching feature learns your activity patterns and preferences to keep you motivated and keep you fit. Elevation: A useful metric for individuals who are engaged in more serious athletic training, elevation is not only a helpful bit of data to know, but it can help your tracker better calculate calories burned. Of course it would be great if one could get the CR holders attempt into ones watch, but alas, one step at a time. However, it’s the UP3’s compatibility with so many third party apps and devices that make it a true standout. Activity tracking: We’re referring to a tracker’s ability to measure steps taken, distance travelled, and calories burned.

The built in heart rate monitor allows for zone and interval training, and TomTom’s patented QuickGPSFix technology keeps track of your precise location so you know exactly how far you’ve gone and exactly how far you have to go. When comparing it to other devices you need to make sure that you are comparing like with like, not forgetting that the battery will be reduced when you play music or use GPS or use the oHRM or use the voice coach or use alerts or use additional sensors or have a screen to power or use the backlight on the screen. It does what it does with MUSIC and with an inbuilt Optical Heart Rate Monitor (oHRM) and with NAVIGATIONAL options. Once it has locked on to your pulse, after you have warmed your body up enough for it to “see”, the heart rate monitor is very impressive. There's still no option to lock the buttons but the placement of the controls means it's unlikely you'll accidentally knock them. It has all the essential features you’d need for a variety of sports and doesn’t restrict you to TomTom’s own software, allowing export to 3rd parties. Using MySports you can see a map of your journey along with all the stats such as time, average pace and calories burned.

Paired with the Polar Flow app, you can watch your weight and see the full details of your progress. TomTom incorporates technology it uses for its satnavs to improve the time it takes to receive a GPS signal. The watch is secure in the strap when out running, but it’s a different situation when you take it off. It’s actually the same technology included in the Adidas MiCoach Smart Run watch and, as the Mio logo indicates, is also included in Mio Alpha’s own running watches.if you don’t sync it has to download from satellite and that takes 15 minutes WHILE YOU ARE RUNNING. It'll come as no surprise that TomTom is now offering up its own online MySports portal for collecting and reviewing your run data. This ability to combine your Runner-captured data with other services you might already use is a big benefit. When synced with the Withings Health Mate App, you can check out all of your stats, set goals, and compete with your Withings-using contacts. The module can be easily removed from the strap when off the wrist, which you'll need to do for connecting it up to the computer.

It opens the door to several kinds of advanced athletic capabilities that you won’t get with a lower-end device. I use this when taking the dog out, not knowing if it’s going to be mostly run or mostly walk depending on how he’s feeling in the temperature. If the HR in the first few minutes is important to you, you’ll need to either warm up first, or what I do is run for 1km and then stand still for 20 seconds (pausing the watch), at which point the HR rapidly falls and matches what I’d expect by that stage when warmed up a bit, and then get going again (unpausing). It’s a bit of a bigger box than the previous version but still contains similar goodies, as shown below. It’s a device for serious training: it measures heart rate and all of your movement, and the LED display can be customised to your liking. You can also export data in a series of file formats including FIT if you want to keep it as part of a training plan. The Garmin Forerunner 220 is a must-have sports watch for runners who are training for distance — and not just because of the GPS.
