About this deal

In 1999 she had two picture books published, I Want a Pet! (1999) and Clarice Bean, That's Me (1999) , the latter being shortlisted for the Nestlé Smarties Book Prize. In 2000 she won a Kate Greenaway Medal for I Will Not Ever, Never Eat a Tomato (2000) and a second Nestlé Smarties Book Prize in 2002 for That Pesky Rat (2002) . In the same year, she wrote her first children's novel, Utterly Me, Clarice Bean (2002). Her second book in this series, Clarice Bean Spells Trouble was shortlisted for the 2005 British Book Awards Children's Book of the Year. The Clarice Bean series is a series of children's books written and illustrated by English author Lauren Child from 1999. The stories follow middle schooler Clarice Bean and her challenges navigating the complex ethical, social and philosophical questions children deal with at school and at home.

Lauren Child burst on to the children’s books scene in 1999 and has since published many bestselling and awardwinning books, including those featuring the hugely popular Charlie and Lola, and the Clarice Bean series. She has won numerous awards including the prestigious Kate Greenaway Medal and the Smarties Gold Award. Her books have been made into an award-winning TV series and have sold in many languages with runaway success. I enjoyed the story and that Clarice and Betty Moody used tips from the Ruby Redfort stories to solve the mystery of the Missing Book Report Trophy. But when Clarice and her best friend, Betty Moody, decide to do their school project on the Ruby Redfort books, they suddenly start finding mysteries everywhere. Like why are all the coats on the wrong hooks at school? Where has Granddad disappeared to? And just what is going on in the garden shed? In Child’s series, the focus is completely on the endearing sibling relationship between seven-year-old Charlie and his sister Lola, who is nearly five. As Charlie tells us: Clarice’s voice is that of a perceptive and astute child who comments with deadpan humour on the goings-on around her, highlighting the ridiculousness of adult behaviour, as well as the adolescent shenanigans of her older brother and sister, and the sheer irritation of little Minal. Clarice’s comical yet shrewd articulation of the child’s perspective can be compared with the work of Roald Dahl, who always empathised with the child’s experience of life and exposed adult unfairness and hypocrisy:urn:oclc:872092436 Republisher_date 20120303212703 Republisher_operator [email protected] Scandate 20120229161956 Scanner scribe2.shenzhen.archive.org Scanningcenter shenzhen Worldcat (source edition) I thought it was funny because she had a good sense of humour and got very over exited. Also with her obsession with Ruby Redford I was able to read parts of that book to. Lauren Child cites her artistic inspirations as E.H. Shepherd, Quentin Blake, Carl Larssen (the Swedish illustrator) and Ludwig Bemelman’s Madeleine books. The insomniac narrator goes in search of the perfect resting place in My Dream Bed by Lauren Child. However, to be able to finish the project for the exhibition, Clarice need to know what she learned from her book. Days have passed and she still couldn’t find anything she learn from her book until one day the trophy went missing, and Mrs Wilberton disqualified Karl assuming he did it since he always cause mischief, but Karl said he did not steal the trophy, so Clarice went to look for the trophy with her best friend Betty. They tried to look for it at Mr Skippards,( the caretaker, janitor) , cupboard cleaning equipment , but they were caught by Mrs Wilberton, so they were punished by cleaning her cupboard. When Clarice and Betty were cleaning, it turns out, the trophy was in Mrs Wilberton cupboard all along. Mrs Wilberton was asking Mr Skiplard to clean the trophy and return the trophy to the cupboard he instead misunderstood and put it in her cupboard . At the end, Calrice didn't win the trophy but the exhibition was kind of a success, because Clarice volcano smoke causes the sprinkle to activate in the school.I liked the Ruby Redfort interludes- they gave me Alex Rider vibes. I think that reading this without the veil of childhood innocence and naivety made me feel like a parent reading to their child, or in my case, my inner child. I also like how children’s books like this have themes of class, power dynamics, family etc but told from the perspective of a child with a limited worldview. Most of these things are just bigger for children because they haven’t learnt to deal with those situations so they seem much more scary. But I think pretty much everything, even the fussy eater […] carries on applying at any age.' The stories explore the way in which Charlie and Lola use their imaginations and creativity to deal with these everyday dilemmas, and their sibling relationship is founded on the way they help each other to do this. Thus, the absence of adult presence enables Child to highlight this element of their relationship. In I Will Not Ever, Never Eat A Tomato, Charlie use his imagination to persuade Lola to eat her vegetables:
