About this deal

This recipe combines the traditional powered milk ( Leche Pinito) with cacao, sugar and water for a rich and creamy drink that everyone will love. Iced Cappuccino (the whipped foam contains dairy and the chocolate may have been cross-contaminated with dairy) During the traditional coffee hour in Costa Rica, children are often served hot chocolate, tea, or a homemade juice.

Costa at home — Our coffees | Costa Coffee

Costa’s online menu provides a transparent breakdown of what is vegan and what’s not, allowing customers to specifically select drinks which are “vegan”, as well as “gluten-free” and “nut-free”. Costa is also one of the few coffee chains to distinguish between “dairy-free” and “vegan” for example – Peach Iced Tea comes up as “dairy-free” but not as “vegan”. This means that even if your barista is not able to tell you what is vegan or not at a Costa store you will be able to tell straight away through their interactive online menu. Sugar

Fruit Coolers are smoothie-like creations and the Ice Teas are…well Iced Teas. Both Fruit Coolers on the Costa menu (mango & passion and red summer berries) are vegan. The Strawberry Iced Infusion is vegan, but the Peach Iced Tea is not vegan. Interestingly the peach iced tea is dairy-free. It is not clear what the non-vegan ingredient is, but I am confident it is most likely to be honey. Honey is most often present in iced tea (if you would like to read more about it in the post, I wrote you can – Is Tea Vegan? Time to Know the Complete Facts). In this section, I look at other non-coffee hot drinks including hot chocolate. Is the Costa Hot Chocolate Vegan? Important Note: Costa changed from using Alpro milk to using a company called Adez (owned by Coca-Cola, who also own Costa…coincidence? I don’t think so). Unfortunately, due to the production of these milks, none of them can be confirmed as gluten-free (a sign instore confirms that the plant-based milks “may contain wheat”), which makes it impossible for gluten-free vegans to enjoy their normal drink at costa. Very disappointing decision from Costa who, time and time again, seem to ignore what their strong customer base wants and needs. What Syrups and Speciality Flavours are Vegan at Costa? Another nice thing to know about Costa is that you don’t have to worry about sugar processed with bone char. Sugar is an issue that constantly pops up in almost every Vegan Bev HQ article I have done. If you have read any of my other posts, you will have noticed the recurring theme of: “yes it looks vegan…apart from the fact that it contains sugar…sugar may not be suitable for vegans because of the potential of being processed with bone char”. This is because bone char is typically used in the United States to process sugar. It is rarely used in the UK (the use of bone char is heavily regulated in Europe). Vegan Costa Coffee At Home When coffee shops first started popping up on the High Streets of the UK, they only had simple menus with the drinks that are still among the most popular today: Lattes, Americanos, Cappuccinos, Flat Whites, Tea. These were offered with a soya milk option but not much else was on the menu for vegans.

Terry’s Chocolate Orange Hot Chocolate. This is from their new range. This will be vegan if made with plant-based milk and vegan cream. The sprinkles and chocolate orange slice is not vegan, so ask to be made without. You can of course ask for any of the festive syrups in your favourite coffee/mocha drink too. What Non-Coffee Hot Drinks are Vegan at Costa? So this one is both easy and difficult. All the Monin syrups (this includes Caramel, Hazelnut, Vanilla, Sugar Syrup, Gingerbread) are all vegan. However, some of the festive sauces are not, and contain milk. Note: as of 2023, Costa use very few Monin syrups now, using their own branded, cheaper tasting syrups. These are, however, vegan: No, Costa Express Machines are not vegan. They only have dairy milk options. What Plant Based Milks are available at Costa?Mar/Apr 23: The new KitKat range is not vegan, the syrup used to make the drinks has milk powder in it.

Unfortunately, the Iced Cappuccinos and Flat Whites are prepared with a dairy foam topping, so these are not suitable. What Food is Vegan at Costa?

Roasted Hazel Lattes and Hot Chocolates. These are just made with their usual hazelnut syrup but come with some gold decorations which are vegan. These need to be requested, as always, with plant-based milk and vegan cream. Heat water to boiling on stovetop or in microwave. Stir in powdered milk and cocoa until dissolved. Add sugar to taste. March 23: Costa have finally released their vegan whipped cream! I have tried it, it is a sweet cream, but really nice. One thing though, it leaves strange lumpy bits at the bottom of the drink. Not sure what this, stabilisers of some sort maybe.

In this section, I break down the Iced Coffees at Costa Coffee. Below is a summary table of the vegan and non-vegan iced coffees available at Costa:

Refresher range: this is vegan. These are a range of three drinks: blood orange/yuzu, watermelon/mint and apple/rhubarb. They are basically just flavoured syrups mixed with water and ice. Might be nicer blended, which they can do in store. What exactly are the vegan drinks at Costa Coffee? In this section, I will break down all the drink items on the menu and provide summary tables for you to easily refer to. Are the Coffees at Costa Vegan?
