The Samyang performs well in this respect, with a pretty tight depth of field at longer focal lengths and smooth rendering of defocused areas. Bokeh discs remain well-rounded when stopping down a little, adding to the attraction. Slowly turn the zoom ring to the left (towards the wide-angle end) while using your upper body and arms to move the camera toward your subject. This is a heavy lens, weighing in at a hefty 1027g without a hood or caps and 1096g with a hood attached. The supplied hood bayonets cleanly onto the lens and is secure, without the need for any retaining catch. Within the bayonet fit for the hood is a standard 82mm filter thread. The minimum focus distance of 0.35m is slightly shorter than in the Sony lens, enabling a slightly larger magnification ratio of 0.27x at the long end of the zoom range. A ‘Custom’ dual-mode switch is featured, which is nominally used for switching between autofocus and manual focus, but can be customized to set other functions like aperture control. Samyang says that additional functions will be added in the future, through firmware updates. This was a tough one to choose as all four lenses do come with great build quality and all feel extraordinarily strong and sturdy. But I did find that out of all four lenses the Sigma just tipped the scales. The aesthetics of the Sigma and exceptional build from them make it the one I would recommend if you are wanting a nice looking and strong lens for your Sony Alpha. We run a range of lab tests under controlled conditions, using the Imatest Master testing suite. Photos of test charts are taken across the range of apertures and zooms (where available), then analyzed for sharpness, distortion and chromatic aberrations. Globally the Samyang 24-70 will be one of the best for video work but compared to the others it delivers less good performance for photography in term of sharpness, bokeh balls shape , ease of use (size and weight).In our view, their efforts have been pretty successful for a standard zoom lens - see the examples below to judge for yourself. Sharpness On to using the lens itself, the first thing I noticed from the Tamron compared to the others was how light this lens is. At only 540g it is nearly half the weight of the Samyang and just over 300g lighter than the Sony. This made it very easy to carry and use.
