About this deal

Don Gentile was born on December 6, 1920, to Italian parents in Piqua, Ohio. As a boy, he had always been fascinated with flying and built, as his mother remembered, hundreds of model airplanes. Don used to say to his mother, “I hope someday I'll be up there flying too.” As a teenager, he played football, baseball, and basketball and loved to swim. He was rather musically inclined and played the saxophone, drums, guitar, and clarinet. He had a sister, Edith, who was two years younger than himself. Godfrey achieved 18 air-to-air kills against the Luftwaffe until August 24, 1944, when he was accidentally shot down by a wingman and captured by the Germans. [6] He later escaped from Stalag Luft III shortly before the end of the war. [2] BS445 slated for Morlaix mission, flown down to departure field, Bolthead. P/O Dominic S Gentile, Blown tire on takeoff, crashed into ditch. Scratched from mission. As a member of the 4th Fighter Group within the Eighth Air Force of the USAAF, Godfrey was friend and wingman to Don Gentile. [3] [4] Together, they were known as " Captains Courageous", "The Two Man Air Force", " Messerschmitt Killers", or " Damon and Pythias". [5]

In August 1942 the three Eagle Squadrons were transferred to the USAAF and formed the 4th Fighter Group. Captain Don Gentile’s best scoring months were from December 1943 to April 1944 and for many of his missions, he flew with his famed wingman, Capt. Johnny Godfrey. Being a ‘publicity kid’ Gentile gained a wide amount of fame. On April 11, 1944, three days after his last three kills, Gentile was awarded the DFC and called ‘one-man air force’ by General Eisenhower. In September 1942, the Eagle squadron pilots transferred to the USAAF, becoming the nucleus of the 4th Fighter Group. [1] Gentile became a flight leader in September 1943, now flying the P-47 Thunderbolt. Having flown Spitfires, Gentile and some of the other pilots of the 4th were displeased when they transitioned to the heavy P-47C in April 1943. On 16 December 1943, Gentile claimed one third-share of a destroyed Ju 88. On 5 January 1944, he claimed a Fw 190 west of Tours. [8] Two Fw 190s were claimed on 14 January [9] and a single 190 on 25 February.
