About this deal

At the time he praised cinematographer Mikael Salomon’s work on the film and even expressed regret that he didn’t appreciate it enough when he was working in it. The Abyss was released to critical acclaim, registering an 89% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes but some believe that the film was expected to perform better at the box office.

You can probably find a VHS somewhere, but neither film is available either on streaming services, in high or standard definition at the time of writing. They enlist the help of a team of underwater drilling platform workers who are to help the deployed Navy SEALS locate the crash site. The material on this site may not be reproduced, distributed, transmitted, cached or otherwise used except with the prior written permission of The Digital Bits, Inc.titles for 2023, including Training Day (expected in January, likely 1/17/23), David Fincher’s Se7en (late Q1 or Q2), Superman II (which includes both the Theatrical Version and the Richard Donner Cut), Superman III, and Superman IV: The Quest for Peace (all three Q2, likely in April), and William Friedkin’s The Exorcist (Q3 2023—which will include both the Theatrical and Director’s Extended Versions).

Neither is available on the Ultra HD 4K Blu-ray format either, in spite of being on the wishlist for fans for a long, long time. And Stephen has delivered his in-depth take on AGFA and Something Weird Video’s nine-film, three-disc The Films of Doris Wishman: The Moonlight Years Blu-ray box set, distributed by Vinegar Syndrome. Last but not least: Tim has taken a deep dive into Sammo Hung, Jackie Chan, and Corey Yuen’s Dragons Forever (1988) which is new on 4K Ultra HD from the good people of 88 Films.

The question is, is Disney likely to release it on physical 4K this year, in the lead up to the theatrical release of Avatar 2, or next year, with the physical release of Avatar 2. It’s curious that the existence of the grading was allowed to be out in the open – presumably with an eye on a 2019 release – and then nothing happened. Well, now we’re hearing the first word that you can tentatively add Giant (1956), Elf (2003), and A Christmas Story (1983) to that list as well.

It shouldn’t be, but there’s something of a feeling that 1989’s The Abyss is the lost James Cameron film.

Home Entertainment to release The Matrix Resurrections and a Matrix 4-Film Collection on Blu-ray and 4K UHD sometime in March or April (the tentative street date is 3/8). They may want to wait for a 2024 release to celebrate the 35th Anniversary of the film, but personally I would rather see it come out by the end of this year. Our original information was that this would either happen with the film’s theatrical release, or with its home release.

Our own Stephen Bjork has posted his in-depth review of Loki: The Complete First Season in 4K Ultra HD Steelbook from Marvel Studios and Disney. Also newly-announced by Lionsgate for release on Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital that same day is The Twilight Saga: The Complete Collection – 15th Anniversary Edition.I'm curious just how much involvement Cameron's had since he seemingly goes to town manipulating each release, Titanic always had quite a warm palette until the last half hour so it'll be quite a feat if he manages to suffuse steel blue throughout a romantic epic. In more recent times, he’s been focused heavily on his quartet of Avatar sequels, as well as his work on Terminator: Dark Fate and Alita: Battle Angel (and he was active on the promotional tour for the latter two). Rumors have appeared on social media over the past week that both The Abyss (1989) and Tombstone (1993) are coming to 4K Ultra HD later this year from Fox and Disney. Lionsgate has also delayed their 4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray release of Jean-Luc Godard’s Contempt (1963) from 9/26 to 10/24.
