Also in the box is a short pipe for draining moisture from the water collection tank and a small remote control. Like most air conditioners, the MeacoCool MC Series 7000 uses refrigerant to cool the air, but it does use the more sustainable R290 variant so it’s a little greener than older air-conditioners that use R410A or R22. The Sleep Mode keeps the unit in low fan speed to ensure the lowest possible noise level, you can combine this with the Off Timer to ensure that you do not wake up cold during the night.

Air conditioner units work best when the hot air they are extracting is expelled outside the building. The MeacoCool comes with two types of window kits: the standard window kit and the flexible window kit. The standard window kit is suitable for sash windows, whereas the flexible window kit is suitable for all types of windows. The use of a window kit prevents warm air from outside entering the room, making the cooling more efficient. It's not the most powerful option out there in terms of BTU, but Meaco offers plenty of alternative models, ranging from this the smallest 7000BTU through to a 14000BTU model. I used a sound-monitoring app on my phone to record how loud the MeacoCool MC Series 7000BTU Portable Air Conditioner was, and whilst I can't vouch for the reliability of the app, when positioned one metre away from the unit I measured 52dB noise levels whilst operating the unit in Cool Mode on the Low speed setting. This increased by approximately five decibels when the fan speed was increased to High speed which is in line with Meaco's own guidance of the unit producing 51-53dB levels. We’ve also designed the air conditioning unit to be as user-friendly as possible. A timer switch allows you to set the air conditioner to cool a room before you use it – perfect for bedrooms or when entertaining – and a sleep mode option reduces both the fan speed and the noise to help you maintain comfort even in the hottest weather. It also comes with a handy remote control, ensuring you’re always in charge. It’s also – relative to most air conditioning units – a very affordable option, and delivers reliable cooling performance.

With rated maximum noise levels of 65dB in high mode and 53dB in low fan mode, the MC 7000 is noticeably louder than your average tower fan (we measured the noise levels at 62dB and 56dB respectively). There’s also a slight buzzing that accompanies the unit while it cools, too, so it isn’t the ideal choice to run overnight in a bedroom.

There’s a handy remote control so that you can keep an eye on your unit’s operation, and we’ve made sure that the air conditioner is easily portable so you can move it around your home or office as it’s needed. Unlike most cooling units this model can be moved alone if you live by yourself, is easy to reposition thanks to its castor wheels, and is a great slimline option to stow away in the car and take to the caravan or a holiday let to keep cool in the summer heat.
