About this deal

A nod and a hello in the street is pleasant, but asking us about our entire family lineage while telling us in detail about your recent divorce is taking it too far. Theon Greyjoy captures Winterfell, [78] but Rodrik Cassel assembles near two thousand men to retake the castle from the ironborn. For many years there was an uneasy alliance between the Northern free states close free state A state in North America which did not support slavery during the 19th century. Too often it devolves into very dry lists of dates, people and percentages, lacking the context and analysis that would really pull a reader in and make all the disparate facts feel more real and connected.

And then I guess it became something of an identifier representing a sense of community for the miners? The White Knife runs south to White Harbor, one of the major cities of the Seven Kingdoms and the main port of the north. The only thing I wish could have been added would have been a chapter on the LGBT history of the North. The way the book is structured threw me off at times too because it jumps around in time an awful lot due to tangents but, to be honest, that is a minor qualm.

King Jon Stark founded the Wolf's Den at the mouth of the White Knife after driving out sea raiders. The north has exported some of sport’s biggest names and defined the sound of generations, from the Beatles to Britpop.

As I said, this is not an analytical account, and some of the thornier issues of northern identity are side stepped. Southerners' main beef with northerners is that northerners "think they're better than southerners". Many northerners will see their mouth water at even the slightest thought of chips and gravy – up here it’s a classic and is widely regarded a substantial meal. One might have expected that devolution would have strengthened a sense of Englishness at the same time that it weakened Britishness. Being referred to as a Geordie, there's nothing worse when you're actually from the Sunderland area, or just anywhere that isn't Newcastle.Among people who think of themselves as Scottish, nearly 90% felt that fellow Scots were people who “share my values”. But at other times, important figures from history are simply listed, with what made them peculiarly Northern often not explored.

It's always slightly depressing when I go down south and no-one thanks the bus driver when they get off. We also know that fewer Scots now subscribe to a shared British identity than before devolution happened in the 1990s.I don't really understand how anyone from the south can have avoided the cultural icon that is Greggs by this point. It isn’t always the most stimulating conversation, but sometimes it’s nice to have a friendly chat about the weather on your morning commute – this is a concept which may seem quite alien to a born and bred southerner. Not only do northerners have a wide range of (sometimes hard to understand) accents, they also have some of the best slang. I just think this book is too small to try to cover so much history of such a large portion of the country.
