That potentiality is the most natural accompaniment to verbs of volition is self-evident. When I say that I have decided to do something or want to do something, the implication is that the decision or desire, though firmly established in my mind, must yet await its realization in practice. I have decided to do something; whether I get the opportunity to carry it out remains to be seen. I desire that during these nine days you bring souls to the fountain of My mercy, that they may draw therefrom strength and refreshment and whatever grace they have need of in the hardships of life, and especially at the hour of death" (Diary, 1209). What You Can Do Then they said, ‘Come, let us build ourselves a city, and a tower with its top in the heavens, and let us make a name for ourselves; otherwise we shall be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.” Genesis 11:4 Finally, in Ephesians 1:5–12, Paul explains how, in Christ, God proorisas believers to receive the gift of salvation. This gift is offered kata prothesin, “according to [God’s] purpose,” not according to an arbitrary, sovereign decision. The passage is peppered with infinitives and prepositional phrases highlighting intention ( eis huiothesian, eis epainon doxēs, eis oikonomian, anakefalaiôsasthai, eis to einai). The focus yet again is on God’s intentions and purposes, not on a predestined Furthermore, God’s intentions are focused on “those whom he foreknew,” (Rom. 8:29), indicating that His plans are based not on arbitrary sovereignty but on the intimate knowledge of human beings and their response to the gospel. The whole construction speaks primarily of God’s intentions and plans. While there is a strong assurance in Romans 8:30 that God’s plan will come to reality for committed believers, the language of intent and potentiality noted here indicates that no predestination in the Calvinist sense is in view, only the working out of the will of God in the hearts of those who respond.

A prototypical story of divine intervention can be found in Hindu mythology, in the story of Narasimha. In the story, the demon king Hiraṇyakaśipu has extracted a guarantee from Brahma that he can be killed neither by man nor animal, neither indoors nor outdoors, neither during the day nor during the night. Feeling invulnerable, Hiraṇyakaśipu begins to persecute devotees of Vishnu, whom he hates. A Vaishnavite boy named Prahlāda prays to Vishnu for help. Vishnu hears his prayer and manifests himself as Narasimha (half-man, half-lion) and rips Hiraṇyakaśipu apart in a doorway (neither indoors nor outdoors) at dusk (neither during the day nor during the night). Acts 4:28 records the words of believers after Peter and John had been released from their arrest. At first sight, it appears that the sufferings of Jesus at the hands of Jews and Gentiles was predestined: “ ‘to do whatever your hand and your plan had predestined [ proōrisen] to take place.’ ” But immediately afterward, the believers continue with an entreaty to the Lord for His protection: “ ‘And now, Lord, look upon their threats and grant to your servants to continue to speak your word with all O Most Holy Mary, Virgin Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth, in accordance with thy wish made known at Fatima, I consecrate myself today to thine Immaculate Heart. To thee I entrust all that I have, all that I am, to thy blessed charge and special keeping and into thine Immaculate Heart. For this day, for every day of my life, and at the hour of my death, I commend my soul and body. The United Nations has declared 2019 the International Year of Indigenous Languages. A year for increased recognition and for the mobilization of stakeholders for collective action around the globe, allowing for the preservation of endangered languages and the cultural identities tied to them. [5] Particular action steps will look different in each context, but I suspect that in Canada the preservation of Indigenous languages will mean a recognition of their place in the already bilingual nation state as national languages with cultural and societal value—in the spirit of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Call to Action—and the subsequent use of such languages on government documentation such as birth certificates. [6] Perhaps aligning ourselves with the Divine intention enacted at Babel and affirmed at Pentecost will mean that we stand together with those who lobby our governments for recognition and who work for language preservation.
