About this deal

His work delves into the ephemera of retro culture as well asthe history of London, geography, and a broad range of other subjects.

Standing as symbols of worship, testaments to kingships or even the strange and wonderful traditions of old and new, these curious places are not just extraordinary sights but reflections on man’s own relationship with the world around us. The last year or two have seen a flood of new books which invite readers to engage on a virtual journey exploring our planet.Never forgetting the freaks and wonders of nature’s own unusual masterpieces: the magical underground river shaped like a dragon’s mouth in the Philippines and the floating world of Palmerston. Atlas of Improbable Places is a fun read (this is a reissue) but fell a little short of my expectations. Follow in the footsteps of a stray goat who led its keeper to uncover lost ancient biblical scrolls.

WINNER OF THE EDWARD STANFORD TRAVEL ILLUSTRATED BOOK OF THE YEAR AWARD FOR Atlas of Vanishing Places. The truths and myths behind these hidden lairs, forgotten cities and improbable wonders are as varied as the destinations themselves.

The truths and myths behind these hidden lairs, forgotten cities and improbable wonders are as varied as the destinations themselves.

This book was fun to read and is complimented well with a photograph and global coordinates of the 50 or so improbable places he has selected. Take an armchair voyagetoplaces both infamous and unknown that have, often by chance or by haphazard means, been destinations ofdiscovery that make up our world today. Inspiring urban explorers and armchair travellers alike to consider a new way of understanding the world we live in, this unique atlas shows you the modern world from surprising new vantage points. With beautiful maps and stunning photography illustrating each destination, Atlas of Improbable Places is a fascinating voyage to the world’s most incredible destinations. He classifies his finding into six groups: dream creations, deserted destinations, architectural oddities, floating worlds, otherworldly places, and subterranean realms. These curious places are not just extraordinary sights but reflections on man’s own relationship with the world around us. I was thinking more along the lines of a coffee table or end table book, which usually means visually attractive as well as informative. Also in the Unexpected Atlas series: Atlas of Untamed Places, Atlas of the Unexpected, Atlas of Vanishing Places. Some of the best academic minds in Britain spent the Second World War writing guidebooks about far-flung places. He has written for the Times, Sunday Times, New Statesman, BBC History Magazine and Kinfolk among others.
