We found the battery insertion instructions self - explanatory and the buttons make the toy sing and light up. My little girl spent a while just looking at the toy and it's flashing lights before progressing to pressing the buttons herself. It has a couple of catchy songs and the lights are different colours which held her attention for a short while. However, after a small period of time the toy switches off by itself and the little spot you press to turn it on isn't very obvious. It doesn't keep her attention very long now she is a little older, although she is interested in everything around her so her attention span isn't very long! This is a good little toy for babies. He enjoyed looking at the flashing lights and once he mastered it, he enjoyed spinning the blue square. He still plays with it, though i don't know if it's the batteries or If it's on its way out but occasionally it randomly just starts playing repeatedly the same tune until its turned off, not fun when your home alone with a baby in middle of night. It's easy for baby to grab and hold onto it as well.
