About this deal

Yeah, another Berserks was fantastic. Let's start with bad things, so it is out of the way: not enough demons. I still love the first episodes - I was mesmerized by this dark world full of blood and terrors from the first book. Since then, this Manga series has changed a lot. It has definitely grown up, and we can see the growth of all members of Hawk band, and there is a looming, dark conclusion in the future - we are just waiting for that. Well, maybe in the next book. Now Guts and Casca. This volume is everything I wanted to see in their relationship. Casca wasn't to be with Griffith who is the leader of the Band of Hawks. We got to see a little bit of her origin last volume which explains why. Deep in her heart it isn't Griffith that she wants it's Guts. There wasn't as much action in this volume which I enjoyed. Don't get me wrong I love the action but these past two volumes were pretty repetitive when it came to that. Guts' is now very vulnerable but he hasn't let loose. He's accepted his comrades which I thought was nice for his future self to hopefully regain that vulnerability. It's not until leaving the band of Hawks and returning where his vulnerability let's loose. I'm pretty sure it's all going to be destroyed next volume but I'm excited.

Miura inspired me as well and I regard him for being the person who taught me just how influential, meaningful and life changing art and literature can be when I first read his series over a decade ago. He changed the way I view entertainment and taught me how to appreciate the deeper meanings in everything I experience. Just as the arc was heading for a climactic buildup to the finale, it ends on a tear jerking cliffhanger that serves as the untimely ending of the series as a whole. It’s a shame that Miura’s masterpiece wasn’t able to be finished, but he’s created the most influential manga of all time that heavily impacted millions of reads and thousands of artists all over the world. Berserk Volume 3 is Miura finally landing everything right. While the pacing is slower than expected and necessarily wanted, I think this is where Berserk finally finds the proper footing and hits each mark it aims for. Overall an explosive arc that’s equally horrifying and beautiful. It has one of the most satisfying reunions and redemption plots of all time. The first arc is only the tip of the iceberg of a very complex, dark and violent tragedy. If you find yourself to be not too impressed with the first volume, I highly recommend reading until at least volume 4 before deciding if this series is for you or not. The first three volumes serve as an interlude to help prepare you for the atrocities to come and may seem somewhat underwhelming in terms of plot, but believe me when I say the payoff is highly rewarding and memorable. And why is Casca's defining characteristic in an entire volume that she's just on her period? To the ridiculous point that even a big bad gorilla villain mentions it to her during an epic battle? Above is my completely spoiler free review showing my appreciation for this series and its characters. I don't have many cons besides the royalty characters being so boring. It wasn't a struggle to get through that part but still. I really loved Guts and Casca and their probably my favorite part of the series. The horror elements really showed here. There was a specific scene with the King and his daughter which really grossed me out and I didn't like. I wonder if their gonna touch upon that in volume 4. I know it's a horror comic but I really disliked the sexual things within this book. It felt more as a nude magazine at times. Maybe it's just me and my taste but sex isn't my favorite thing to read. I know every sec scene was crucial to the story so that's why I'm not going to lower my ranking. Especially in the end but man I don't wanna see all that shit.

Kentaro Miura's Berserk has reigned in darkness for three decades, creating an international legion of acolytes and inspiring anime TV series and feature films, video and card games, and a phalanx of related products. And now celebrating its thirtieth anniversary, the entire Berserk series is being released in handsome oversized bookshelf editions, each collecting three volumes of the original manga. The last few chapters is what really worked for me in this volume. Don't get me wrong, the battles are wonderfully drawn, brutal, and work really well. Watching Guts and Casca work together was just amazing. But it really is the fall of Griffith and his decent into madness and Guts rising up to be a person he is proud of. Of bearing his soul to the woman he loves and letting her see him for the first time ever fully. That same year, in 1982, Miura enrolled in an artistic curriculum in high school, where he and his classmates started publishing their works in school booklets, as well as having his first dōjinshi published in a fan-produced magazine. In 1985, Miura applied for the entrance examination of an art college in Nihon University. He submitted Futanabi for examination and was granted admission. This project was later nominated Best New Author work in Weekly Shōnen Magazine. Another Miura manga Noa was published in Weekly Shōnen Magazine the very same year. Due to a disagreement with one of the editors, the manga was stalled and eventually dropped altogether. This is approximately where Miura's career hit a slump. Not to mention his rival Griffith who is equally complex and incredibly rich with psychological depth, but there will be more on that as you delve further in. I would strongly recommend this series for hardcore fans of fantasy and horror, so long as you're prepared to be traumatized for life by the disgustingly harsh nature of its content. After a life of grief and trauma, Guts reluctantly joins Griffith on his quest to attain his own kingdom while simultaneously struggling to come to terms with his own identity. We get to see a side of Guts we’ve never experienced up until this point. We see his vulnerability, his wounded soul, his ability to show affection to others, his role as a battle commander, and his blossoming relationships with Casca and Griffith; the two people who end up having the biggest impact on his entire life for very different reasons. The acclaimed adult fantasy manga now in 7x10 deluxe hardcover editions! My second read of this volume (original review below), and my thoughts remain the same. So just a little note: I'm impressed by how vast the Band of Hawk's obsession with Griffith is. You can see how strong personalities can build a suicide cult around them. Yeah, and Griffith can really rot, as far as I'm concerned. He is portrayed as ambitious, but you can see glimpses of his true psychopathic nature. From all these stories, everything that Griffith does seems like a theatre - an act which serial killers do to look like normal human beings. But there is not much empathy or morale in him. This bubbles up when Guts leaves - he just cannot bear to lose his toys and throws a tantrum. In this case, the tantrum is a brutal seduction of the princess.

So I've officially binged the first three of these huge bind-ups within 24 hours, and now I have to wait for the next big collection to come out. Damn. Right when it was getting extra intense!
