From the first rousing chapter to the last, Scream for Me is intense, complex, and unforgettable.”— New York Times bestselling author James Patterson

This is a disturbing, violent, visceral tug-at-your-heart-strings book. Former Marine Val Sorensen works as an investigator and sometime bodyguard for Broussard Investigations. Her work team is like family. J. P. “Kaj” Cardozo is a widower with a son who is infinitely precious to him. Elijah is preternaturally smart. A diagnosis of childhood diabetes hasn’t crimped his sails. Kaj (“spelled K-a-j, but pronounced Kai , rhyming with pie ”) is a public prosecutor who has made a name for himself in the six months he’s lived in New Orleans. There are folks in NOLA who will stop at nothing to prevent Kaj’s “high-profile celebrity sexual assault case” from ever reaching court. They try to kidnap Elijah, hoping his father will drop the case to ensure his son’s safety. Instead Kaj turns to Broussard Investigations, a private investigation firm that is famous for its ability to protect its clients, for help. Some details were brushed over, such as the mole. This was obviously quite a big part of the story and the events that happened but it didn't have enough explanation or attention for me, which made the impact of what happened quite dull.

My heart ached for the innocent here because these bad guys were awful! I didn’t want anyone landing in their hands at all! My heart pounded as the events unfolded! Thankfully, Val and Kaj were smart and didn’t take unnecessary risks. Still… BENEATH DARK WATERS is book 2 in Rose's New Orleans series and book #28 in the Romantic Suspense series. Karen Rose's signature style is evident with a long, compelling, intricately woven plot line spanning a relatively short amount of time revolving around a large cast of characters. Pay attention to the small details as they always prove to be clues in Rose's books. Her debut suspense novel, DON'T TELL, was released in July, 2003. Since then, she has published fifteen more novels and two novellas. Her seventeenth novel, ALONE IN THE DARK, will be released in 2016.

Beneath Dark Waters

iOnline version: |aRose, Karen. |tBeneath dark waters. |bFirst edition |dNew York : Berkley, 2023 |z9780593336342 |w(DLC) 2022049487 This riveting crime thriller, police procedural, and romantic suspense novel keeps you on the edge of your seat from start to finish. The novel builds suspense in a way that pulls readers into the lives of the characters. The plot is full of chasing down leads and interviewing people as well as plenty of danger for those involved. I enjoyed how the author provided unpredictable moments and a little humor, which offset some gruesome spots in this tale. Themes include murder, abduction, relationships, families, drugs, friendship, secrets, trust, assault, torture, corruption, and much more. Review copy was received from NetGalley. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review. ELLIJAH is awesome but unbelievable at 9 years old. So definitely suspend your beliefs in this novel and just enjoy what you can. Everything lays out a bit too easily and some of the connections are OTT

She glanced at Elijah, who still slept deeply, before turning her screen so that Kaj could see it more easily. “I’m sure you’ve seen most of what I’ve got here, since you’re prosecuting Aaron.” So in steps Burke Broussard Private Investigation Agency. Not only PIs but some of the best bodyguards in the business. Val Sorensen is assigned as Elijah’s bodyguard, a role she takes incredibly seriously. Val, Kai and Burke work to figure out who tried to kidnap Elijah so that they can keep him safe from further attempts, Val realises she has a personal connection to the gang suspected to be behind the attempt. The Sixth Day gang killed her brother, and she has wanted to take them down since. But is there more?Prosecutor Kaj Jean-Pierre Cardoza and his son ten-year-old son Elijah are new to the New Orleans area, only being there six months. Kaj knows there is corruption in the police department and the Prosecutor’s office has had their hands full cleaning up a past ADA’s shady dealings. Kaj has been assigned two high profile cases, one where a movie star was allegedly raped by the director and one where a drug dealer beat his son’s oncologist to death when he failed to save him. Unfortunately, both put him and his son in danger. When Elijah narrowly escapes an attempted kidnapping, Kaj doesn’t trust the police to guard them and instead hires Broussard Investigations to keep them safe.

This story is loaded with action, grit, gruesome imagery, and even some sweet lightheartedness that provides the balance to even out the crime and suspense levels. The best part of this story is the character development. She perfected the bad guys with all of the creepiness and meanness that draws you into the depths of the story. The supporting characters are wonderful as well. With a range of depth and conviction, Rose grabs your interest throughout this massive book. This author never fails to bring suspense and emotion with well developed characters. Beneath Dark Waters is set in New Orleans; it is the second book set there and #28 in the Romantic Suspense series. This is my favorite romance genre by far because their is a mystery and action along with the romance. Beneath Dark Waters is a standalone second book in the New Orleans sub-series and the twenty-eighth entry in the overall Romantic Suspense series. There are connections to the previous book, but not in such a way that new readers couldn’t grab this one and appreciate all they were getting.
