About this deal

The UDM-SE was released in the first part of 2022, around the time of the home-friendly UniFi Dream Router ( UDR). Despite the name, The UDM-SE is more related to the UDR than the UniFi Dream Machine ( UDM) that came out in late 2019. The UDM line of products are essentially enterprise-level network appliances that combine the following functions into a single device: I’m also getting the U6 enterprise as I have a smart home and the 2.4Ghz network is getting congested (not sure if it will help as most smart sensors have very basic radios but let’s see). If you do not see yourself needing better switch capability than built in 8 PoE anytime soon and foresee using beyond gigabit WAN soon, SE is better value. However, it's also the least secure. It's better than no VPN at all, and it does its purpose of making a remote device part of a local network.

The UDM-SE is also a future-proof console since it will be able to run all upcoming UniFi OS applications. Engineered for end-to-end simplicity, the UDM-SE features an integrated Bluetooth radio that streamlines the initial setup and configuration process, which can be completed in minutes with the UniFI Network application (web or mobile). Ubiquiti Dream Machine Special Edition (UDM-SE): Representing the flexible non-Wi-Fi and “Enterprise of Things” approach If you don’t need PoE-enabled Ethernet ports at all, the UDM-Pro will probably be fine. But do note that its WAN Ethernet port is limited to 1 Gigabit Ethernet. You may choose to restrict the collection or use of your personal information in the following ways: The Cloud Keys are different. They are not gateways or routers, they only run UniFi OS applications. I’m including them to make comparing which models run which UniFi OS applications easier. Cloud Keys require the use of the USG, USG-Pro, UXG-Lite, UXG-Pro, or some 3rd party router or firewall. Please Note:Whilst there is no official hard limit on the number of managed devices, for maximum stability, Ubiquiti advises a soft cap of 45 devices per UDM. This includes switches and access points. The wireless client device limit is unaffected. Ubiquiti UniFiDream Machine Special Edition (UDM-SE) The point is: a non-Wi-Fi router's relevancy is independent of Wi-Fi. And you can easily add Wi-Fi to it via an access point. Here's my UDM-SE being tested with the U6 Enterprise access point. The two work well together, but you need a Multi-Gig PoE switch to maximize the AP's performance. PoE interfaces (2) PoE+ IEEE 802.3at (pair A 1, 2+; 3, 6-)(6) PoE IEEE 802.3af (pair A 1, 2+; 3, 6-) Both UDM-SE and UDM-Pro support Wireguard VPN now (earlier only the UDM-SE did). What else do you need to buy along with the UDM?

This article will compare and contrast the two more advanced models UDM-SE and the UDM-Pro, and help you decide which is best for your needs. Some controllers can run more applications simultaneously and allow each application to handle more hardware units than others. For new deployments however it's a harder choice both are great products this really comes down to how is it going to be used and is it worth the extra money? The UDM-SE (as well as the UDR) got the UniFi OS 3 treatment in November 2022. The UDM-Pro will likely get the OS later in 2023 but still be lesser in terms of power and ports.

For Wi-Fi, you will need to get a Wi-Fi Access Point (WAP) such as the Unifi 6 Liteor Unifi 6 Pro, both of which I use in my home. I also have a detailed comparison of the various Unifi WAPs. You can do virtually anything you'd want to do with the UDM-SE's ports or connected clients, and in comprehensive ways. And the console has everything you can think of regarding network, Wi-Fi, and mesh configurations. I do want the protection though. Ok, if you say so I guess I’ll have to shell out another 450 for this . Another question, is it possible to move all my smaller smart-device/bridges to power them via the console now? This would allow them to benefit from the UPS. They are all super low power. My ZimaBoard tops out at about 16W though technically it has an adaptor that can do 36W so I’ll assume that. All the other little bridges and gadgets barely draw 3-5W each. So with a bit of googling I realized I could use PoE splitters to power them from the console!

Hardware-wise, it has more PoE ports, multi-Gigabit support, a larger internal storage option, and much higher capability. But software-wise, the two are identical since both are UniFi controllers. You may choose the UDM Pro because you need more PoE ports than the 8 available on the UDM SE. In this case, consider a managed PoE switch such as the US-8-150W. Do I need the UDM if I already have the USG? In return, OpenVPN requires extra client software, making it less practical. But this protocol is the best if you want to be serious about VPN. L2TP/IPsec If you're looking to build a top-notch multi-Gigabit-capable network, the UDM-SE is the ultimate router that will be relevant long in the future. And today, a year after the launch, I'd still confidently call it cutting-edge. The Ubiquiti Unifi Dream Machine Special Edition is designed for high speed home and business internet connections with dual wan (10G SFP+ and 2.5GbE RJ45 ports). Unlike the UDM & UDM-PRO the Special Edition (UDM-SE) includes 8 PoE capable ports allowing the UDM-SE to power cameras, phones and access points alike.

We'll start by looking at all of the current options for UniFi gateways, including some older ones that Ubiquiti no longer lists on their official store. Current Gateways It took me quite some time to finally review the Ubiquiti Dream Machine Special Edition (UDM-SE). I generally cover consumer products, and this is an advanced device designed for pro-consumers, SMBs, or even enterprise environments. This has been one of the biggest debate and wished for things ever since the UDM PRO was first announced. And they have added it to the Special addition - all 8 ports (6 are 802.3af and 2 are 802.3at) The UniFi family -- represented by the Dream Machine (UDM), UDM-Pro, the Dream Router (UDR), or UDM-SE... -- aims at business/pro/enterprise users. They are comprehensive consoles acting as the central controllers of various products, of which networking devices are only part of the picture.
