About this deal

Our test unit, formally known as IdeaPad Gaming 3 15ARH7 (model 82SB0001US), combines a six-core, 3.3GHz (4.5GHz boosted) Ryzen 5 6600H processor with a skimpy 8GB of memory, a skimpier 256GB NVMe solid-state drive (SSD), and an entry-level GeForce RTX 3050 GPU, putting it at a disadvantage to RTX 3050 Ti and RTX 3060 machines. Performance laptops for creators, professionals, or gamers– we’ve got powerhouses that rival what desktops deliver. The IdeaPad Gaming 3 15 is equipped with a lithium-polymer battery that provides up to 9.7 hours of battery life. Thanks to RapidCharge technology, the battery can recover 2 hours of battery life in 15 minutes, resulting in an always-ready device. In terms of connectivity, there are no major innovations compared to other products in the series. In addition to two USB 3.1 ports and a USB Type-C Gen1 port, the notebook is equipped with an HDMI 2.0 output, a Gigabit Ethernet port and a local network with WiFi and Bluetooth modules. Design and Reliability Battery: These systems do not support batteries that are not genuine Lenovo-made or authorised. Systems will continue to boot, but may not charge unauthorised batteries. Lenovo has no responsibility for the performance or safety of unauthorised batteries, and provides no warranties for failures or damage arising out of their use. **Battery life is based on the MobileMark® 2014 methodology and is an estimated maximum. Actual battery life may vary based on many factors, including screen brightness, active applications, features, power management settings, battery age and conditioning, and other customer preferences.

Thankfully, the upgrade options are decent, as you get two SODIMM slots for memory expansion, two M.2 PCIe x4 slots, as well as a 2.5-inch SATA drive bay with the mounting and connecting accessories included inside the box.The IdeaPad Gaming 3 is the AMD-powered sibling of the Intel-based IdeaPad Gaming 3i, which we reviewed here in July 2020. Both are 15.6-inch systems with Full HD (1,920-by-1,080-pixel) screens with a 120Hz refresh rate. We test Windows PCs' graphics with two DirectX 12 gaming simulations from UL's 3DMark, Night Raid (more modest, suitable for laptops with integrated graphics) and Time Spy (more demanding, suitable for gaming rigs with discrete GPUs).

Lenovo IdeaPad Gaming 3 (15, 2022) in the configuration we tested has a Full HD 120Hz IPS panel with a model number LEN156FHD (BOE NV156FHM-NX1, BOE0A81). Its diagonal is 15.6″ (39.62 cm), and the resolution is 1920 х 1080 pixels. The screen ratio is 16:9, and we are looking at a pixel density of – 142 ppi, and a pitch of 0.18 х 0.18 mm. The screen turns into Retina when viewed at distance equal to or greater than 60cm (24″) (from this distance one’s eye stops differentiating the separate pixels, and it is normal for looking at a laptop). All battery life claims are approximate and based on results using the MobileMark ® 2018 battery-life benchmark test. Actual battery life will vary and depends on many factors such as product configuration and usage, software use, wireless functionality, power management settings, and screen brightness. The maximum capacity of the battery will decrease with time and use. Your laptop is your biggest gateway to the online world and beyond (except for your smartphone, of course). And we all have different priorities:

Quality Display

The main benchmark of UL's PCMark 10 simulates a variety of real-world productivity and content creation workflows to measure overall performance for office-centric tasks, such as word processing, spreadsheeting, web browsing, and video conferencing. We also run PCMark 10's Full System Drive test to assess the load time and throughput of a laptop's storage. Remove the metal shroud to access the two SODIMM slots. They work with DDR5 modules and we are pretty confident that you can fit up to 64GB in total. Storage-wise, there are two M.2 PCIe x4 slots. The 42mm one supports Gen 4 drives, while the 80mm one is limited to Gen 3 SSDs. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, the discharging, while gaming issue is not limited to the Intel platform only. Lenovo was inconsiderate-enough to provide a 135W charger with both their IdeaPad Gaming 3 offerings, which means two things. First, they had to limit the TGP of their AMD option, since the CPUs draw more energy than the Tiger Lake-H35 lineup. Then, there is the bigger concern. When you are in the Performance mode in the Vantage software, your battery will drain, when you play games. The rate will vary, depending on the load you hit it with. Innovative 2-in-1s– part laptop, part tablet, part nothing you’ve seen before – for those who want to tap the untested power of the new. Here, the touchpad sports a decent size. It is quite responsive, and its surface is smooth. However, we are not really sure if it’s going to hold up well in the future,

It’s worth noting that the Power button is separated, and its LED lights up in three different colors (Blue, White, and Red), depending on the Performance mode you are in. The modes can be toggled by simultaneously pressing the “Fn” and “Q” keys, which switch between the Quite, Normal, and Performance presets. Like the TUF series of ASUS, Lenovo releases its IdeaPad Gaming 3 notebooks in two versions. Naturally, one comes with an Intel chipset, while the other is equipped with an AMD one. Since we already had our look on the one paired with Team Blue, now we are going to see if the AMD model is any better. And in the future, we are going to make an in-depth comparison between the two, and possibly some of its competitors in this segment of the market. Lenovo IdeaPad Gaming 3 (15″, 2021)’s display doesn’t use PWM at any brightness level. This makes it comfortable and safe in this aspect. Our ThinkPadlaptops set the standard for business computing. Tough as nails and reliable, these laptops and 2-in-1s keep you productive in any environment. And it gives you the tools you need – from high-end processing and graphics to cutting-edge touchscreen technology, from pen support to epic battery life, ThinkPad keeps you productive and engaged wherever you are.

After that, we test the reaction time of the pixels with the usual “Gray-to-Gray” method from 50% White to 80% White and vice versa between 10% and 90% of the amplitude. It’s also worth mentioning that the IdeaPad Gaming 3 (15″, 2021) is the fastest laptop we’ve tested with the Ryzen 5 5600H, even beating the Legion 5 Pro (16″). Also, its keyboard is one of the best on the market, thus providing a fantastic gaming experience. The next figure shows how well the display is able to reproduce really dark parts of an image, which is essential when watching movies or playing games in low ambient light. The I/O on the other hand is something we did test, and we found it to be quite extensive. The only thing missing here is an SD card reader. Something missing on the inside is a 2.5-inch SATA drive bay. To be frank, we don’t really miss it, because you get two M.2 PCIe x4 slots. They are far more compact, and significantly faster. One of them even supports Gen 4 SSDs. On the other hand, it seems that Lenovo tries to balance the performance, by using a lower TGP graphics card – 85W vs 90W on the Intel model. This, of course, is if you get the RTX 3050 or RTX 3050 Ti-equipped models. Interestingly, the AMD device adds the option to go for an RTX 3060, which is a nice advantage. We measured a maximum brightness of 269 nits in the middle of the screen and 262 nits as an average for the whole area, with a maximum deviation of 8%. The Correlated Color Temperature on a white screen is 6970K – slightly colder than the optimal for the sRGB standard of 6500K. We tested the Lenovo IdeaPad Gaming 3 15 (model 82K200UYUS) with an AMD Ryzen 7 5800H CPU, an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 dedicated GPU, 8GB of memory, and 1256GB of storage. The screen, CPU, GPU, memory, and storage are configurable; you can see the available options in the table below. Our review applies only to variants with a model number starting with '82K2'. We've reviewed the Intel-based Lenovo IdeaPad Gaming 3i (2021) separately. Screen Our “Design and Gaming” profile delivers optimal color temperature (6500K) at 140 cd/m2 luminance and sRGB gamma mode. Nevertheless, we saw some flex from both the lid and the base, but we can’t say that the material is low quality. Instead, it is pretty similar to the one used in the previous year’s Legion 5 devices. In addition, the IdeaPad Gaming 3 (15″, 2022) is pretty portable with a profile of 21.8mm, and a weight of 2.32 kg. In terms of display options, you can get a 120Hz 1080p panel or a 165Hz of the same resolution. Both are IPS units, with the former one obviously being less expensive, while the latter should offer up to 100% sRGB color coverage.
