About this deal

Hayley has left the manor but forgot her asthma medication. She collapsed but is saved by Humphrey. Hayley‘s father is relieved that she has broken up with Steve, whom he has always disliked. Her entire family decides to take James to his family, so that they are all reunited for Christmas. Hayley and James sort out their differences and reconcile. Daniel says: "One of our traditions is that we all go and watch Leyton Orient Football Club on Boxing Day. So, you know, we have to endure that! Other than that it’s just silly little things like country walks, overeating and watching the kids unwrap their presents. Because I’m usually so busy, what I really identify with this film is the importance of not working and just chilling out with the family."

A sequel, Your Christmas or Mine 2, was filmed in Austria and London during 2023. [7] [8] See also [ edit ]

Synopsis

Except for the initial twist or rather impulsive decision of the lead pair, Jim O'Hanlon's film is fairly predictable. It does, however, have some delightful parts to savour. The film is content to remain within the confines of its genre. The plot, on the other hand, never changes gears and takes its time getting to the climax. It creates a festively snowy setting for its characters to get to work on not being as annoying as other characters in similar films. The visuals are simply stunning (cinematography –Gavin Struthers) and fulfilling music (Paul Saunderson) make it a delight to watch. Both James and Hayley decided at the last minute to change trains, and spend Christmas with each other. She took his train, and he took hers, not knowing of each other’s decisions.

In terms of the plot, it is one of those romcoms where a lot of the conflict could be easily resolved if people actually spoke to each other, so it does feel a tad frustrating and tiresome at times. Other than that the plot is really rather enjoyable. It is nice and breezy for the most part, but with a few emotional moments that feel a little underdeveloped but still add a nice layer to the piece. It largely follows the tried and tested romcom formula, with the added twist that the two romantic leads are not actually on screen together for the majority of the film. Despite this I found myself quite invested in the relationship, and thought it was actually quite well thought out from a plot perspective. Asa Butterfield stars as Hughes with his other half, Taylor, being played by newcomer Cora Kirk ( Prey For The Devil). You can also expect to see The Crown’s Alex Jennings and This Is Going To Hurt’s Harriet Walter as they portray the Hughes parents. And in the other household, the Taylor parents will be played by Daniel Mays ( Code 404, Des) and Angela Griffin ( Waterloo Road, The Suspect). Your Christmas or Mine? is a 2022 Christmas romantic comedy film directed by Jim O'Hanlon from a screenplay by Tom Parry , produced by Kate Heggie and starring Asa Butterfield, Daniel Mays, Angela Griffin and Cora Kirk. Asa Butterfield and Cora Kirk put in two engaging and enjoyable lead performances, with some great comedic work from them both.

Both try to leave their respective host family, but all trains are cancelled due to bad weather. Hayley tries to reignite Christmas spirit in the manor by decorating the manor. Things go awry when Humphrey’s dog is accidentally shot by a neighbour, upsetting Humphrey, who also disapproves of the decorations. Meanwhile, James has a spa day with Hayley‘s female relatives until he meets Steve, who turns out to be Hayley‘s fiancé, with whom she secretly broke up. Steve and James get into a fight, during which he reveals that he is Hayley‘s boyfriend and that she chose to not be with her family, after which he angrily leaves. STORY: Months into their relationship, young lovers—Hayley Taylor (Cora Kirk) and James Huges (Asa Butterfield)—are forced to be apart for the holidays until they decide they need to be together but are separated by a goofy circumstance. After we follow a distractingly ugly CG snowflake glide through some even uglier CG clouds, we land at Marylebone station and on a young student couple James (Sex Education’s Asa Butterfield, flatter than the film requires) and Hayley (Cora Kirk, fizzier than the film deserves) as they face being away from each other for Christmas. They prepare for their respective train journeys but a sudden burst of romance has them deciding to surprise the other and they end up finding themselves alone with a family they’ve never met before for the big day while keeping their relationship secret. Farce ensues. Cora Kirk as Hayley, also on the wrong train! (Image credit: Prime Video) Interview: Daniel Mays on playing Geoff Taylor

Daniel Mays plays Hayley's dad Goeff Taylor and he told us: “He is the dad of the rough around the edges family in Macclesfield,” says Daniel. “He has a penchant for knitted turkey jumpers. That’s the reason why I wanted to do the gig in the first place. He’s fun-loving with a heart of gold." The downside of streamers going harder than ever for Christmas movies is that we get far too much dross like this but the upside is that, for those desperate for festive viewing, there are so many other options. Leave this one under the tree. In Your Christmas Or Mine? Asa Butterfield and Cora Kirk play student lovers James and Hayley, who are in their first year of university. When Christmas comes around they kiss one another goodbye and head off home. But, unbeknownst to each other, they both decide to swap trains and enjoy Christmas with their other half. That means they both end up spending the festive period with their in-laws families rather than each other. Hayley must navigate staying with James’ posh, aristocratic family while James has to spend the holidays with Hayley’s down-to-earth, working-class family. Filming took place in August 2021 at Pinewood Studios of comedian Parry’s debut screenplay and produced by Kate Heggie at Shiny Buttons Productions. [1] Executive producers are Kris Thykier and Andy Brereton. O’Hanlon described the screenplay as having “warmth, humour, and emotional honesty” and credited it with attracting the cast to the project. [2] Butterfield also praised Parry’s writing describing to The Times how “it captured the essence of a crazy family Christmas,” and how when filming “a lot of it played out like a piece of theatre. Especially when we were shooting those scenes where everyone’s running around screaming. All those Christmas jokes and traditions, which we all have, but it’s rare to see that captured so organically.” [3] Release [ edit ]
