Whiskybase B.V. is the Dutch private limited liability company, having its statutory seat in Rotterdam, The Netherlands and its office at Zwaanshals 530, 3035 KS Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Whiskybase B.V. is registered with the Dutch Chamber of Commerce under no. 52072819. Well we had success with the previous Christmas choice so had high hopes, however the Aberfeldy left us underwhelmed. It was a potential easy win for the bottle with eager, excited drinkers waiting to pour out the first drams but it was not to be.

Given my love of this dram, it's a tough one to review fairly, but let's take off my rose-tinted glasses and try to be at least somewhat analytical about things. While its “ Exceptional Cask” releases are bottled at cask strength, the three whiskies we look at today — representing the core of Aberfeldy’s single malt lineup, all formally relaunched a few years ago — are all bottled at 80 proof. All three are aged in a combination of ex-bourbon casks, first fill oloroso sherry casks, and refill casks which are then married together before bottling — though note the additional aging on the 16 year old below.

Nothing in the Terms shall exclude or limit our liability for fraudulent misrepresentation or for death or personal injury resulting from gross negligence or willful misconduct by us. Aberfeldy is best known for its significant contributions to Dewar’s Scotch blends (Dewar’s being the distillery’s corporate owner), but it’s also the home to its own line of single malts, with bottlings reaching as old as 40 years of age. Situated uniquely between the Highlands and the Lowlands region of Scotland — technically either the Midlands or the Lower Highlands, depending on who you ask — Aberfeldy is known for producing mainstream, approachable whiskies with broad appeal. Nose: Truly glorious. Close your eyes and you're sitting in a comfy worn leather chair surrounded by shelves of ancient leather-bound tombs whilst honey bees flit around the gentle smoke of your delicate cigar. A florid description if ever there was one – allow me to elucidate properly: Immediate warm and waxy honey aromas merge with very woody notes of tanned leather, furniture polish and pencil shavings. There’s slight orange marmalade for sweetness and an underlying sweet and savoury herb note, possibly nettles or even dill leaves. Subtle spicing from very light pepper, cinnamon and musk provide further intrigues. I could nose this for hours – and indeed have. Runny honey, dried fruits, and biscuity malt enlivened by a fresh, zesty quality, and notes of waxed citrus.

Situated along the River Tay, the burgh of Aberfeldy has a population of fewer than 2,000 and is the subject of the famous Robert Burns Poem ""The Birks of Aberfeldy."" In addition, the town is home to the eponymous distillery, which was founded in 1896 by John Dewar & Sons. The distillery was closed during World War I and World War II, as the British government rationed the supply of grains during wartime to ensure an adequate food supply. In 1972, however, the distillery was rebuilt and retrofitted with four new copper pot stills.Aberfeldy's 21 year old was re-launched with a new design in 2015 and lies within theircore range of bottlings (12, 16, 18, 21 & 28 year olds). It's a combination of ex-bourbon and sherry casks and has won several gold medals and 'best in show' awards. It's a whisky that has always held a soft spot in my heart, and one to this day which I still use as a 'learning tool' for introducingnewbies to the more woody flavours which can be associated with longer periods of cask maturation. I shared the financial burden with my Scottish pal as part of our annual Christmas pact to split the cost and explore a more expensive bottle that normally we could not justify on our own steam, a great partnership i can highly recommend.
