Like many other books of his, this book is all about self-help by understanding something and looking at it from very different ways.

But man continues to separate himself, as though he is the only subject among a world of objects—such dualist thinking is a neurosis. With modest financial means, they chose to live in pastoral surroundings, and Watts, an only child, grew up playing at Brookside, learning the names of wild flowers and butterflies. Mark Watts relates that Watts was cremated on Muir Beach at 8:30 am after being discovered deceased at 6:00 am. Alan Watts invites readers to immerse themselves in 12 of his pinnacle thinking sessions in this best book. The dualism that defines the conflict between perfect and flawed is constructed and subjective and should be done away with. She was Norwegian, a member of the Lutheran Church of Norway, but when her friend the priest would visit we'd have a Catholic Mass sans Dad. Two decades later, in The Way of Zen [18] he disparaged The Spirit of Zen as a "popularisation of Suzuki's earlier works, and besides being very unscholarly it is in many respects out of date and misleading.

It covers a lot of things he has written about earlier, like the amazing and life-changing practice of Taoism, the knowledge of one’s true self, Zen, and so on. The illusion that we are isolated beings, unconnected to the rest of the universe, has led us to view the “outside” world with hostility, and has fueled our misuse of technology and our violent and hostile subjugation of the natural world. But David Chadwick had come to hear this and David Chadwick is the archivist for the San Francisco Zen Center, and Suzuki and my father had been good friends, and Richard Baker, rōshi Baker, had presided over my father's funeral. Flaws in one context can be Perfections in another or as the saying goes, "One man's trash is another man's treasure".

You’ll gonna want to read Watts book a few times, an existential manual of this caliber is timeless and profoundly insightful.

Later, not much later, Mike Miley was to introduce me to the real stuff, Sri Aurobindo and the lot, but Mom and Alan Watts got me going. In 1932, he produced his first booklet, An Outline of Zen Buddhism, a summary based on the Zen writings of D. However, the pattern was set, in that Watts did not hide his dislike for religious outlooks that he decided were dour, guilt-ridden, or militantly proselytizing—no matter if they were found within Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, or Buddhism. Watts was awarded a master's degree in theology in response to his thesis, which he published as a popular edition under the title Behold the Spirit: A Study in the Necessity of Mystical Religion. Original tapes of his broadcasts and talks are currently held by the Pacifica Radio Archives, based at KPFK in Los Angeles, and at the Electronic University archive founded by his son, Mark Watts.Writing for an age of unprecedented anxiety, Watts draws on the wisdom of Eastern philosophies to explore how we can lessen our worries about the future, rein in our lamentations about the past, and place more of our energies into the time we actually inhabit: the present. At this writing, the same ancient warfare is being enacted between Republicans and Democrats, and between Moslems and the West. Following the 1966 publication of The Book: On the Taboo Against Knowing Who You Are, which sold very well, requests for appearances poured in.

So I think it was, like many things in his life, it was well thought out, well orchestrated, and well executed. Change is in some ways an illusion, for we are always at a point of uncertainty where any future can occur. The most strongly enforced of all known taboos is the taboo against knowing who or what you really are behind the mask of your apparently separate, independent, and isolated ego. We do not realize that there never was, is, nor will be any other experience than present experience.

It’s a casual ease into the idea of Zen, and the essays are really interesting and might just surprise you. He also studied some movements from the traditional Chinese martial art taijiquan, with an Asian colleague, Al Chung-liang Huang.
