Straight needles: these are the most common needles around. They are useful for knitting flat objects, and are a good way to get started for beginners. Straight needles tend to measure between 7 and 16 inches in length, though they can be longer. Circular needles use a cable that can vary in length up to approximately 60 inches, but the most common lengths are 16, 24, and 32 inches. In general, the more stitches you have, the longer your needles will need to be. It's easy to get confused with terminology when you see needles and hooks discussed online. That's because there are three different numbering systems that people use to talk about sizes!

Lace weight yarn is the lightest weight yarn available, it is made up of two plies of very fine yarn twisted together. Lace weight yarn is very thin and delicate, which makes it ideal for creating an airy fabric and intricate projects such as shawls, doilies, and other lacy items. A pattern typically only provides you with a size, aka the diameter of the needle. The rest is up to your own preference. Your knitting needles need to be long enough to accommodate all stitches without them being squeezed together so tightly that they fall off whenever you relax.

The length of your knitting needles might not be important for straight needles, but it is very important when it comes to knitting in the round with circular needles. Cotton – Cotton is a durable, absorbent and soft material which makes it ideal for a whole host of projects. It makes great lightweight clothing and is also excellent for making functional home ware projects such as teatowels and napkins.

Yarn weight isn’t the only factor, remember: you’ll also have to consider the size, material, and texture of your project and find the needles that fit best. A needle gauge is simply a thin piece of wood or plastic with holes of different sizes, markings, and a ruler.
