likely the most refined pure Trek film of all time, the likes of which we would basically never see again Meehan, Eileen (2005). Why TV is Not Our Fault: Television Programming, Viewers, and Who's Really in Control. Rowman & Littlefield. ISBN 0-7425-2486-8. a b Tobias, Tracey (December 2001). "Redesigning the USS Enterprise NCC-1701". Star Trek: The Magazine. Fabbri Publishing. 2 (8): 84–87. Roddenberry firmly believed that throwaway clothes were the future of the industry, and this idea was incorporated into the costumes of The Motion Picture. William Ware Theiss, the designer who created the original television series costumes, was too busy to work on the film. Instead Robert Fletcher, considered one of American theater's most successful costume and scenic designers, was selected to design the new uniforms, suits, and robes for the production. Fletcher eschewed man-made synthetics for natural materials, finding that these fabrics sewed better and lasted longer. [15] :129 As times had changed, the brightly multicolored Starfleet uniforms were revised: the miniskirts worn by women in the original series would now be considered sexist, and Wise and Fletcher deemed the colors garish and working against believability on the big screen. Fletcher's first task was to create new, less conspicuous uniforms. [15] :123–5

During the rewrite of the final scenes, the studio executives clashed with Roddenberry about the script's ending, believing that the concept of a living machine was too far-fetched. The executives consulted Asimov: if the writer decided a sentient machine was plausible, the ending could stay. Asimov loved the ending, but made one small suggestion; he felt that the use of the word "wormhole" was incorrect, and that the anomaly that the Enterprise found itself in would be more accurately called a "temporal tunnel". [15] :155–6 Filming [ edit ] Bee Dee I’m acquainted with Daren Dochterman from the Star Trek Set Tour and I was his 1st AD on a Phase 2 episode. He’s an amazingly talented individual, with an eye for detail. He “gets” and loves Star Trek like we fans do. In fact, he’s just an uber Trek fan, who has worked, very hard, honing his talents, to actually work for the franchise on different productions. This film, with his other co-workers on the re-mastering team, is in good hands.Invasion of the Body Snatchers". Archived from the original on November 18, 2020 . Retrieved April 18, 2015. Paramount has released a portion of the deleted scene where Kirk prepares to broadcast a message down to engineering in the hopes that it will sway the Ilia probe. Audio Commentary by Robert Wise, Douglas Trumbull, John Dykstra, Jerry Goldsmith, and Stephen Collins Alex Weldon was hired to be supervisor of special effects for the film. [n 1] Weldon was planning on retiring after 42 years of effects work, but his wife urged him to take on Star Trek because she thought he did not have enough to do. [15] :159 When Weldon was hired, many of the effects had already been started or completed by Rugg; it was up to Weldon to complete more complex and higher-budgeted effects for the motion picture. The first step of preparation involved analyzing the script in the number, duration, and type of effects. Before costs could be determined and Weldon could shop for necessary items, he and the other members of the special effects team worked out all possibilities for pulling off the effects in a convincing manner. Preview Of 4K Remastered ‘Star Trek: The Motion Picture

We’ve all seen half-a**ed HD transfers where the HD upgrades to the visual effects, and model shots from 65MM source make the rest of the film look like amateur hour 16MM garbage. The Kohlinar scene is especially prone to those eye-cancer provoking mismatching failures… I don’t agree. I thought this had some of the same problems that Nolan’s digital transfer and cleanup of 2001: A Space Odyssey had/has – except Star Trek has ’em in spades. I saw this on a laser projection in a premium Los Angeles theater and there are a lot of problems mastering and restoring to 4k television when it translates to projection in the space of an auditorium. A nacelle was added to the original window for the 2001 version. The 2022 version removed the entire wall and replaced it with a new matte of the Officer’s Lounge window with a CG nacelle in view. Also retained is Ilia’s healing of Chekov, adding a little more nuance to what is mostly a blank slate of a character, as well as some brief interactions between the supporting crew members. I am so looking forward to this. I haven’t watched TMP in a few years even though I have it on Blu-Ray. Once this hits P+, I may never watch that Blu-Ray again anyway lol. Walter Koenig as Pavel Chekov, the Enterprise 's weapons officer. Koenig noted that the expected sense of camaraderie and euphoria at being assembled for screen tests at the start of the picture was nonexistent. "This may be Star Trek," he wrote, "but it isn't the old Star Trek." The actor was hopeful for the film, but admitted he was disappointed by his character's bit part. [6] :24 The film is available now on the Paramount+ streaming service in the USA. And in May you can see it on the big screen during a 3-day at theaters across the USA with Fathom Events. Blu-ray and digital releases of the film will arrive in September from Paramount Home Video. International availability has not been announced yet.

For the DVD, the original plates were scanned in as the base for the new gold version. The credits were recreated from scratch for the 4K, and now have sparkles around the edge.

The three carbon units whose passion is bringing this project to life: restoration supervisor Mike Matessino, producer David C. Fein, and visual effects supervisor Daren R. Dochterman. That space station now looks amazing and very realistic, like it could REALLY happen in a not so distant future! It matches the IXS Enterprise NASA-design!!!

Roddenberry also provided a large amount of input, sending memos to Ramsay via Wise with ideas for editing. Ramsay tried to cut as much unnecessary footage as he could as long as the film's character and story development were not damaged. [15] :178–9 One of Roddenberry's ideas was to have the Vulcans speak their own language. Because the original Vulcan scenes had been photographed with actors speaking English, the "language" needed to lip-sync with the actor's lines. [33] Douglas Trumbull was given the task of finishing The Motion Picture 's opticals in time for a December 1979 release date. Finally, the officers lounge scene. What on earth were they thinking? They should have just kept the original shot. The new shot replaces this random shot of an explosion with the stage ceiling visible. This shot was recreated using an original optical VFX plate with a new CG Enterprise and a different explosion from the 2001 version which reflects against the hull.
