About this deal

Thankfully I don't get much oud in this at all, since I'm not a big fan. The exception, is the little bit at the start, but mostly just seems like more or less a non-descript "woody" smell in general to my nose.(shades of Royal Cedar, er....Royal Oud I mean;) Miguel has been a Fragrantica editor and columnist since 2013, and his work has been recognized by the Fragrance Foundation and the Perfumed Plume Awards several times, as well as by the Art and Olfaction Awards.

Versace Oud Noir Eau de Parfum 100ml | SEPHORA UK

Oud’s like an enigmatic character. It’s got depth, like an ocean of stories in a single drop. But hold your horses, it’s not playing the gender game. Oud doesn’t have a him or her tag. So know that my oud experience is just starting. That said, this fragrance is incredible. It lasts all day, it has a very complex and interesting mutation throughout the day; I love it and I hope it's here to stay. The nose behind this lovely scent is Ilias Ermenidis, a renowned Greek perfumer specializing in multi-cultural fragrances. Ambroisie is the best Arabian Oud fragrance for her. Feel the richness of the Aquilaria tree along with Russian coriander and Haitian Amyris. Long lasting with a sillage that is strong but not overwhelming. Scent-wise it’s similar to Dior’s Oud Ispahan if you replace the citrus with rose.

Spicy, slightly oudy(very synthetic but pleasant) with some leathery and woody notes. At a more designer price point it is a great 'training wheels oud' for those wanting to smell that type of scent without jumping into deeper waters of niche prices and more natural and animalic/dirty ouds that can be more challenging. With bright citrus top notes and warm agarwood, Acqua di Parma Colonia Oud is a lighter take on oud.

Side note: Versace Oud Noir draws instant parallels to Tom Ford Oud Wood. Both colognes craft oud in a way that feels stylish and considered for the Western market. There’s a suggestion of clove entwined with praline. Deep, enigmatic and unforgettable. So glamorous, you’ll be reaching for this fragrance next time you’re invited to a red carpet ball or the Oscars. A wonderful choice for a sultry night out – or in! Spicy, dense, and woody, this fragrance balances the oud so it’s noticeable but not dominant. It might feel too “safe” to oud enthusiasts but a great place to start if you’re new to wearing ouds. The opening is all peppery woods and smoke, a really nice kind of somehow clean and fresh smoky oud, in spite of how contradictory that might sound. Eventually these darker notes give way to sweeter neroli and some bigarade for counter-balance, all of which replaces the grape leaf opening of Versace Man. The familiar saffron and cardamom from Versace Man floats into view, with the tobacco note of Versace Man died down to a nondescript tonka to support a greater presence of patchouli and woody-amber materials judiciously applied (no sandpaper scratch here). Beyond that, traces of Amouage-like incense (the highest-quality note in Versace pour Homme Oud Noir) really hit home the purpose of this being a "premium" upgrade from the usual masculine Versace fare. Performance is perfectly fine, although this gets quieter after hour two.

This scent in one word? Accessible. So many ouds are overpowering to non-fragrance enthusiasts and while we may like them, the "skank" can be overpowering for most normal people. In summary, Versace Oud Noir smells like a gentle oud scent, traversing several nuances through its development. They start with spices and tangy orange, before floating through sweetness and warmth. Finally, the oud rests upon a base pairing of resins and earthiness.

After the bitter orange opening goes away and it starts to transition into the drydown, this sweetens up a bit. That, combined with the spicy notes and the leather coming out is very nice indeed. Slightly powdery as well...but nothing like, say Burberry Brit for instance. Elegantly blended, Versace Oud Noir is a good intro to the beauty of agarwood as it is a mellower and less aggressive version of oud that you often find. Performance varies a lot from person to person but in general, it has moderate sillage and longevity compared to your average oud. And additionally, orange works alongside that spice. It imbues a zesty brightness, bringing fresh balance to the darkened woods. Now this is a traditional combination: oud and rose. But don't expect the same result as all other combinations based on these notes. Oud Oriental is more complex and subtle than that, and it's a gender-bender that will please all floriental lovers. Rose is the star of this creation, but it is masterfully distorted with freesia and violet to make it more spicy and sweet. This peppery, spicy-sweet rose makes the perfect pair for a very balmy and medicinal oud note that goes away with time, developing slowly on the skin and becoming slightly animalic (leather) towards the end. The sweetness of vanilla and heliotrope brings out the powdery aspect of Oud Oriental. The oud endures as the blend fully dries down. Frankincense and patchouli emerge soon after, deepening its presence. This new duo also ingrains resinous, earthy hues. They become more distinct over time as earlier ingredients slowly withdraw.
