Larkin’s Selected Letters, edited by his longtime friend, poet Anthony Thwaite, reveals much about the writer’s personal and professional life between 1940 and 1985. Washington Post Book Worldreviewer John Simon noted that the letters are “about intimacy, conviviality, and getting things off one’s heaving chest into a heedful ear.” He suggests that “these cheerful, despairing, frolicsome, often foul-mouthed, grouchy, self-assertive and self-depreciating missives should not be missed by anyone who appreciates Larkin’s verse.”

The poet distrusted travel abroad and professed ignorance of foreign literature, including most modern American poetry. He also tried to avoid the cliches of his own culture, such as the tendency to read portent into an artist’s childhood. In his poetry and essays, Larkin remembered his early years as “unspent” and “boring,” as he grew up the son of a city treasurer in Coventry. Poor eyesight and stuttering plagued Larkin as a youth; he retreated into solitude, read widely, and began to write poetry as a nightly routine. In 1940 he enrolled at Oxford, beginning “a vital stage in his personal and literary development,” according to Bruce K. Martin in the Dictionary of Literary Biography. At Oxford Larkin studied English literature and cultivated the friendship of those who shared his special interests, including Kingsley Amis and John Wain. He graduated with first class honors in 1943, and, having to account for himself with the wartime Ministry of Labor, he took a position as librarian in the small Shropshire town of Wellington. While there he wrote both of his novels as well as The North Ship, his first volume of poetry. After working at several other university libraries, Larkin moved to Hull in 1955 and began a 30-year association with the library at the University of Hull. He is still admired for his expansion and modernization of that facility. Phil’s been saying that this is a bad idea from the start, kept dodging this particular ball and chain long as he could. Spent all his time away, off with his Shadows. Busy, busy, busy. For all the kinks, I will write them in a safe, sane and consensual way. I will write them only with a female reader (since I am more comfortable with it). Language: English Words: 5,179 Chapters: 9/? Philip II | Reviews in History The Grand Strategy of Philip II | Reviews in History

Year-Old Caleb Wittebane has been Witch hunting for 11 years now. But he Is faced with a promotion that will change his life forever. Evelyn hasn't been around in years. However, all of that is about to change. He must keep his knowledge of witches under wraps. He enters the demon realm to truly learn their way of life. However, he wont be able to keep this secret for long. As the situation unfurled in the Netherlands, Philip's Grand Strategy developed along lines already outlined as 'classic' by Parker in the first part of his book: Philip, being a control freak, sought to 'micromanage policy' and left detailed but restrictive lists of how the Low Countries were to be dealt with by his regent, Margaret of Parma. Philip had not taken advice to rule from the Netherlands and, as such, soon became out-of-touch with concerns and interests there. He managed to antagonise many sections of the Netherlands community and individuals who had previously been at each others throats saw the opportunity to unite against a common threat. When Philip and his regent were perceived to have retreated on their policy concerning the Netherlands, this was seen as governmental weakness and led to an increase in opposition. In the early 1560s, Philip neglected the Netherlands for the Mediterranean and failed to respond to increasing provocations. The classic concern of too many identifiable problems to deal with at one time is demonstrated clearly and with verve. Philip was unwilling to undertake action necessary to solve the solution. In the politically correct twenty-first century, his humanity is seen as a virtue - he refused to open the sluices and flood the troublesome area. Humanity is, however, subjective - to early modern contemporaries, Philip was too weak to undertake the (admittedly unpalatable) action required to quench the threat of rebellion. Admittedly he received conflicting advice - 'I do not know the truth of what is happening' - but his indecision and ultimately limited response only stored up problems for later in his reign.

Soon enough, it'll all be over. But not for Hunter. No matter what, it'll never be over for Hunter. She looked beautiful, but most of all she looked happy, and it became acid corroding his very entrails. How many people— demons—had she talked to in this way? How many had now seen the twinkle in her eye after a job well done, the dimples on her cheeks when she smiled? Too many, his mind answered, hands closed in such tight fists he could feel the marks forming on his palms. She was enchanted by the sights, her gaze fixed on the scenery as they rode past lush plains, simple farms and unending roads, and all Philip could think was why did you leave then? If you like nature that much, if you are so happy to see me, why leave in the first place? And to be with her, of all people? Language: English Words: 5,422 Chapters: 1/1 Comments: 5 Kudos: 17 Bookmarks: 2 Hits: 711 Larkin arrived at his conclusions candidly, concerned to expose evasions so that the reader might stand “naked but honest, ‘less deceived’ ... before the realities of life and death,” to quote King. Larkin himself offered a rather wry description of his accomplishments—an assessment that, despite its levity, links him emotionally to his work. In 1979 he told the Observer:“I think writing about unhappiness is probably the source of my popularity, if I have any… Deprivation is for me what daffodils were for Wordsworth.” None of the stories are connected, they’re all their own segments.
