About this deal

Everything in the city is wrong, from the cars and underground trains that make her sick to school, where the other kids tease her.

Can Mafalda find a way through a seemingly dark future and still go to school, play football and look after her beloved cat? There is a creak and the glow of embers and the smell of burning wood as October opens the door for her readers.Obviously, the actual reason is to give October a reason to go to school now, make friends, and generally move the story along, but you can't remind us of these real-world consequences and only apply them to one parent) and I do think the central conflict wrapped up a little too neatly and without quite enough conversation or work on October's part to parse her feelings, rendering the happily-ever-after ending somewhat unearned. It's a magical book, a young girl lives in the forrest/woods with her father and they enjoy a very happy life in the outdoors. Autumn is by far my favourite season and every single element about this novel exuded exactly what I so adore about it. if i wasn't crying at the story i was tearing up over the gorgeous and vivid descriptions of october's woodland home. We also experience the joy of reconciliation, which is something we all yearn for in our broken relationships.

This experience has been fantastic primarily for the children, the school and also for me (professionally).

Mafalda is a nine-year-old girl who knows one thing: some time in the next six months her sight will fail completely. So therefore October was forced to live with her mother in the city in leave her old life in the woods behind.

October lives in an isolated part of the woods with her father- no neighbours, no friends, no schooling and the woman who used to be her mother long gone.

Her journey from feeling trapped and scared through to her gradual realization that beauty and wonder can be found anywhere (if you look hard enough) is one of the captivating themes of the book. The problem with reading any of these prize longlists is that every time I read a book – each and every book – I am convinced that it will and should win!
