About this deal

Alternatively, if you’re travelling by public transport, there are some really great bus options (though not the train). Rather than just list a bunch of random attractions, I’ll include the nicest East Neuk fishing villages in the following section, working from south to north following the Fife coastal trail. Elie and Earlsferry The Open Championship is regularly played on the iconic Old Course and a visit to the British Golf Museum shares over 500 years of golfing history. The fishing industry has played a huge role in the history and character of Anstruther and beyond. The renowned Scottish Fisheries Museum is owned by the charitable trust, and it tells the story of the fisheries and the people who were involved, covering everything from boat building and technology, to fishing traditions and the impact of the industry on community life through the centuries. The Old Stable | This seaside hideaway has the look of a traditional stone cottage but inside is super stylish and modern. Comfy and cosy, with beautiful features, this gorgeous 1-bed tiny home is best booked well in advance. Book here. Apartments

Our restaurant reviewer extraordinaire, Gaby Soutar, gave high marks to t his charming cafe located within Bowhouse just outside of St Monans.

Escape to a Random Place

Looking at a map of East Fife, St Andrews appears to be the region’s heart. Roads run like arteries from it into the countryside. Each one sends golfers in different directions to explore the myriad of courses Fife has to offer. Head down the A91 through Cupar and you’ll reach Ladybank. At the renowned golf courses run by the Crail Golfing Society– Craighead Links and Balcomie Links, you can enjoy panoramic sea views from every hole. Elie Ness Lighthouse Standing at the tip of Elie Ness, Elie Ness Lighthouse has been guiding vessels through the treacherous waters around the Forth of Firth for almost 120 years and is now a very popular subject for photographers. Built in response to pleas from mariners who were unable to see the warning flashes from the lighthouses on the Isle of May and Inchkeith during stormy weather, a beam of white light has been shining from the top of Elie Ness Lighthouse every six seconds since 1908.

Another attraction in Anstruther is situated 3/4 mile east of the harbour at the Scottish Fisheries Museum. This museum features displays about (you guessed it) fishing and includes fishing boat models, dioramas, paintings and photographs, plus a café and a gift shop. Elie & Earlsferry | If you’re looking for golden sandy beaches, then Elie is perfect. A sheltered bay surrounds a vast expanse of soft sands, wonderful for paddles and picnics. Nearby facilities-wise there’s a deli, a foodie inn, and plenty carparking. Adrenaline junkies can also take a RIB to the Isle of May for an exhilarating boat trip around the island. Anstruther also boasts Scotland’s Fishery Museum, with 18 boats on display, one of which, Reaper, was used in the hit TV series Outlander. There are remnants of the old working harbour, including a fleet of fishing boats, trawlers and small creel boats. This restaurant opened in 2022, and owners, Nicholas Frost and Damon Reynolds spent 30 intense months refurbishing this 19th century Crail building on High Street North. With regard to villages, there are twelve in total, but it’s the East Neuk fishing villages (highlighted below) that are the main draw for tourists. These are; Earlsferry, Elie, Colinsburgh, St. Monans, Pittenweem, Arncroach, Carnbee, Anstruther, Cellardyke, Kilrenny, Crail, and Kingsbarns. Anstruther Fish Bar: A much talked about, award- winning fish and chips and fresh local seafood spot. This place is famous in Scotland for its delicious Fish & Chips! A must for anyone who is a fan of the seaside combo! Find Out More This museum is a restored Cold War nuclear bunker which is secreted away under a farmhouse. Visitors can explore numerous rooms complete with weaponry, a BBC studio, 2 cinemas, and a café. Heading away from the harbour will take you to the centre of Crail which has several cafés and tearooms, a highly-rated local pottery shop, and the Crail Heritage Museum which features lots of exhibits that explain Crail’s history and its fishing industry. Discover the past of Fife on historical maps

Bowhouse aims to connect small growers and producers with restaurants and shoppers, giving everyone better access to local ingredients and produce. Also, you can visit the Crail Museum and Heritage Centre, Crail Pottery or Crail Harbour Gallery and Tea Room. The last destination in the East Neuk of Fife is Kingsbarns which lies 5 miles around the coast and past the Kilminning Coast Nature Reserve. Kingsbarns Distillery produces award-winning whisky and Darnley’s Gin. You can sample the whiskey or gin on a distillery tour at Kingsbarns Distillery and have a drink or three.

The Good Food Guide also lists Craig Millar @ 16 West End as a place to visit for a meal when you're in St Monans. Alternatively, head west over dramatic Kincraig Hill to the pretty village of Lower Largo. This 10km coastal route is one of the best sections of the Fife Coastal Path. The furthest north of all the East Neuk villages might be a challenge to get to, but it’s worth the effort. From the beautiful high street (with some of the quirkiest and beautifully restored cottages you’ll see) pop into the Crail Pottery and then follow the winding coastal path down to the pretty harbour. You’ll find Elie in the East Neuk of Fife, on Scotland’s east coast. Elie is actually the first stop on a trip around East Neuk – an area of Fife known for its postcard perfect fishing villages and wonderfully wild coastline. This inlet of the Firth of Forth stretches for around 27km, incorporating harbour villages from Pittenweemto lesser-known Kingsbarns, as well as countless beaches, sea views, historical ruins, and walks along the gorgeous Fife coastline.

Uncover More

Now this is the important part of this post. The thing about the East Neuk is that it’s not that easy to get to. There’s no railway line in East Neuk so getting the train here is out. That’s a big part of its charm, though, as I’m sure the area is a lot more untouched than it would be if there was a train station in the heart of it. How to get to the East Neuk from Edinburgh Travel within Newport or Wormit is not permitted. Travel is permitted to the FlexiZone, or to Cupar/Forgan Arts Centre.
