About this deal

Both of which are all vital for a numb er of processes within your body, such as regulating your blood pressure, supporting your immune system and improving bone health. 11,12 Despite the increase in automation, we have had to nearly double our staff to 150 in just three years to keep up with the growing output. Those people have generally been more skilled, which has added value to the business. In 2011, we began trading as Lancashire Farm Dairies to bolster our leading brand and strengthen our provenance. Pakeeza Dairies, however, remains the company name. About six years ago, we entered the supermarkets. Around the time, they were bolstering their ethnic sections, and as yogurt is an essential element of Asian cooking, we were well-placed to capitalise on the trend. The business was started by my father, Ghulam, in 1984. Situated on Drake Street in Rochdale and then trading as Pakeeza Dairies, the company started off buying yogurt ready-made from a dairy in Peterborough. When the dairy went into liquidation, Pakeeza turned its hand to processing milk and manufacturing yogurt – albeit in a very small way.

Traditionally, a live yoghurt starter uses a well-balanced blend of bacteria that consumes sugars that naturally occur in milk – this bacterium turns lactose that is present in milk to lactic acid, which in turn changes the taste and texture. GREATEST ACHIEVEMENT: Having grown the business organically over two decades and being headstrong with the challenges that have come up Studies show that both of these vitamins may protect against heart disease and certain neural tube birth defects. 9,10 Outside work: On the rare times I’m away from the factory, I love spending time with my children. I also enjoy swimmingOur instincts proved right and the rebrand, which kept the name but changed the look and feel of the Lancashire Farm products, has helped to push the envelope and has been a raving success. We’re seeing continued sustained growth as a result and the team at GC Business Growth Hub have been hugely supportive and integral to this, pointing us to the right sources of support, helping with our manufacturing funding challenges and bringing in experts to collaborate and help the business grow. Live yoghurt contains live bacteria or probiotics that have either been part of a starter culture or added after the yoghurt has been pasteurised. Another challenge to the business was when the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) ruled in 2012 that the health claims of probiotics were unproven. A wide range of our products include cultures like Bifidobacterium BB12 and Lactobacillus acidophilus, which we had to reclassify as ‘bio-cultures’.

You only have to walk down a supermarket yogurt aisle to see it is an exceptionally saturated place. Retailers also want to offer greater choice and variety than ever before, which presents both an opportunity and a threat to manufacturers. Rachel’s Organic being delisted from Tesco last year was just one example. Our Lancashire Farm brand continues to grow by 10–20% year-on-year, and I think there’s no reason why the company cannot grow by 40–50% over the next three to five years. The factory is running at 70% capacity, so we don’t have any problems on that front. The market is full of choices and some yoghurts are high in protein, calcium, a variety of vitamins and live culture, or probiotics which are thought to support your improved gut health 6. SA: We were founded in 1984 and originally the company was run by father and son, Ghulam Zouq and Azhar Zouq. Ghulam sadly passed away in 2021 and Azhar continues to lead the business as Managing Director. Ghulam had left Pakistan for England in 1960 and originally worked in Lancashire’s textile mills, before setting up a fruit and veg stall in Rochdale in the early 1980s. He started as a market trader, buying and selling yoghurt, which became a speciality before he transformed the business to begin manufacturing its own yoghurt.Essentially, the business grew through independent retailers, and it remains the bread and butter of our business. As it stands, we’ve got a really strong independent network across the UK, but in particular along the M62 corridor and in London and Birmingham. If you have any concerns, then you should discuss them with your GP or a health professional. Milk allergy

This is because vitamin D helps promote bone and immune system health, and there is also evidence to suggest that it may also reduce the risk of heart disease .13,14 JM: First and foremost, it’s all about improving your engagement with the local area – whether you’re a sole trader, small, large, whatever size business you are. Look to make an introduction if you haven’t already and build a relationship with the Hub, they will find a way to support you. Fundamentally you won’t know what support they can offer until you’ve spoken. Even if it’s just for them to lend an ear and signpost various resources and tools for your business. Probiotics such Bifidobacteriaand Lactobacillus which are found in yoghurt have been shown to help the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). 21,22 The consequence for us is that we are trying to sell products with added value in what is becoming a commoditised market, which makes life harder. It has also increased the number of yogurt products out there – in fact, I think there are more now than there ever has been.

What does live yoghurt do in your body?

We also are starting to ramp up our marketing spend, which has been very limited in the past. Expect some experiential activity from us this year, and some bigger things in 2017. You need to have a strong competitive edge to stay in the supermarkets, and we believe we have it. And there is plenty of growth available for us. While we have a great nationwide reach, there is still the potential for more. Asda is a case in point – we are in about 200 of its 525 stores. Having sugar in excess may be associated with several health problems, including diabetes and obesity. 36,37,38 The probiotics that are found in live yoghurt are made up of yeasts and bacteria that are considered good for your digestive system. If you are lactose intolerant, it may be a case of trial and error to find out what works for you personally. This also includes the earlier mentioned vitamins and minerals that are found in yoghurt which are also thought to help support improve your immune system.
