For traveling and for use “on the go” I wanted a pen that is compact and highly robust and at the same time a reasonably good and comfortable writer. All that in a price range that would not let me completely panic in case I would miss the pen during travel or it got stolen. The 'raw' brass finish has no lacquer to wear off. Instead, the bare metal, like the pen's owner, will reflect the trials, tribulations and joys of a lifetime's work and play, with with the surface mellowing over time to a fine burnished patina unique to it's history. My first impression was that your poor ink flow was due to machining oils, I would have started by that first. Other than that, I agree that it is a substantial yet comfortable pen and it has a great design (IMHO much better than its clones). Mine has aged nicely, and I suspect it will still evolve its patina. That's another plus for me, the organic surface and that it is raw, not varnished as the clones gives -again IMHO- a distinctive feeling. I hope you like the patina yours may develop, but if you don't, you can always polish it. After having investigated the options I could find for a travel pen, I decided that a Kaweco brass Sport with “M”-nib would likely be the right choice for me. I did not have the opportunity to physically try any of the pens in question and had therefore to rely on what I could find online. The AL Sport is made of aluminum, a sturdy metal that is lighter than metals like brass or steel. Most AL Sports have matte, anodized finishes that won’t chip or flake, but they can still be gouged by other objects like house keys.

Made from solid lead-free 'eco' brass, which is left untreated and uncoated, it weighs in at 36g which is more than most other pens currently available. The untreated finish means this pen will - like the Al-Sport Raw that came before it - wear over time and develop a unique patina depending on use and storage conditions. The finish can either be left to develop or can be restored using brass polish and a liberal application of elbow grease.
