The latest version (using Sphero Edu) lets you program Sphero robots with JavaScript, the most common web programming language in the world.

It’s great for teaching children spatial awareness, sequential logic and basic coding skills.After testing the Artie 3000 and seeing that my kids enjoyed the design and concept, I was very excited to try the Artie Max and was filled with anticipation. The entire experience has left much to be desired. From the beginning, I have to go through the firmware update a few times for it to work. After the first relatively successful test, I was getting excited again but then it seemed to be plagued with WiFi connectivity issues, and having to tape a piece of paper to my desk each time to draw just seems like there is an opportunity for educational Insights to include a practical solution. I am sure that when the Artie Max works well, kids would like it because it offers several opportunities to learn some coding. My frustration with it has not allowed me to get that far. A physical toy helps children build a better idea of what coding is for, and who doesn’t like cute robots? Once the Artie Max was fully charged, my kids removed the USB-micro cable, slid the rear power button to the on position, and grabbed our iPad Pro 11”. We navigated to settings, to WiFi, and then chose Artie Max from the list. From there, we opened Safari and typed “local.ArtieMax.com.” With kids ages 3F, 6F, 10M, 12M, we started with the Artie Max UI and the Remote Control features. STEM (Science Technology Engineering Mathematics) is great, but some children are naturally more artistically creative, so the new acronym in town is STEAM, which adds the Arts to the educational mix. I used the drag and drop feature to design my first test drawing. I decided on a square. Here is the code: Kids use a tablet or computer to code PYXEL to walk, make sounds, express emotions, and change color. Like Bittle, reviewed above, it can humorously raise a leg, although is not as sophisticated in its movements. Instructions are clear and there are tutorials and how-to videos.Screen-Free Learning: Say goodbye to excessive screen time! Artie 3000 encourages hands-on coding experiences without the need for a computer or tablet. Instead, you'll be controlling Artie's movements using a special coding language. I love the idea of Artie 3000, but the user interface could definitely be easier to use. The drag and drop system isn’t as smooth as it could be. However, with a little practice, it’s ok to use. Syd is 6 and she managed to do it by herself after some coaching. (She’s pretty patient, though). Syd was beyond proud of herself for mastering Artie 3000 all by herself – I took this photo to show her dad what she’d done! This board game, for two to four players, is inspired by Learning Resources’ Code & Go Robot Mouse (see above) and aims through tactile touch to teach kids coding basics without the need for a screen, app or batteries. Artie Max draws with 3 interchangeable onboard markers, has built-in tutorials, rechargeable battery with micro USB cord, smart sensors, line detection, remote control functionality and more!

Building on the enormous success of Botley The Coding Robot in 2018, Learning Resources have introduced Artie 3000™ in 2019. Artie™ is the new coding and drawing robot that puts children in control. Artie works amazingly well once you get the hang of his interface. It’s fascinating to watch him, too. Syd has spent hours inputting random code into him, to see what happens. It’s a brilliant cause and effect type toy, and a great introduction to the idea of coding. No actual coding happens, though. All told, we love our Artie 3000 Drawing and Coding Robot, and I can see him getting lots of love over the Easter Holidays! Intuitive Coding Experience: Artie 3000 provides a user-friendly coding platform that is suitable for beginners and experienced coders alike. Its simple interface allows you to drag and drop commands, making coding a breeze. We played with the line following mode; we tested the cliff sensor and noted that Artie Max robot avoided toppling off the end of our table. Beyond testing the tutorial modes for the advanced JAVASCRIPT, PYTHON, and C++, these modes were beyond the limits of our family’s ability. However, we appreciated the opportunity to continue to grow/expand our abilities. Aimed squarely at primary school children in science, technology, engineering and maths lessons the Robot Mouse Kit is a cute way to develop coding enthusiasm and critical thinking skills from a young age.The vibrant blue-colored rear panel provided a large oblique view of the Artie Max Robot, several geometric drawings, the 8+ logo, and three product features: 1. You Code, Artie Draws. 2. Simple Setup. 3. Bonus features. The STEM technology promised the ability to learn to code line by line via the Artie Max setup. As you learn the techniques, you can expand the skills to create even more complicated designs.
