About this deal

What also makes the results from that phone, and a few others that we’ve tested, is that they can combine conventional image camera capture with the thermal image to better explain what you are looking at. This feature is very important when looking at an engine, as an example, since random blobs of colour might not reveal exactly where the issue is without additional information. And you may think that the latter is better, but, looking at FLIR’s approach where the rechargeable inner battery would often fail, shows that using the smartphone battery may not be such a bad idea after all. Also, let’s see the power consumption of the Topdon TC001 since I was skeptical about the advertised 0.25W. My small multi-meter shows an average of 0.31W which is a bit above the advertised value, but still an almost negligible amount considering the actual performance of the thermal camera. While I was running these tests, my colleague Kate Kozuch overheard my early verdict that I didn’t think that any of the phones were technically overheating. That’s until she turned around and said her iPhone 15 Pro Max was really hot. I am not sure it works that well to be honest, but I suppose that it’s better than nothing. Lastly, you can manually select the temperature range or simply let the camera recognize the correct range by itself.

This is a thermal imaging device that can allow you to use your android phone as a thermal imager when connected. The screen size and battery life of this camera depend on the connected phone. It detects heat radiation by transforming a phone into a thermal camera.

Seek Thermal Compact PRO

The Seek Thermal Compact Pro is the last USB thermal camera we’ll be looking at. Now this one is similar to the flir one pro thermal camera, with some key differences: It has a much higher 320 x 240 pixel resolution (76,800 pixels in total), it doesn’t have anything mounted on it except for the thermal sensor because it makes use of your phone’s digital camera for the visible image and it can spot heat up to 1800 feet away. The only obvious limitation of this design when compared with phones that have Thermal imaging inherently is that it can’t mix main sensor images with thermal data to show edges and other details. With adjustable focus, the lens can be set on subjects as far as 550m (1,800ft). That’s not only handy for outdoor pursuits but allows you to take full advantage of the relatively high resolution to get sharp thermal images at any distance. For the most part, the best thermal-imaging cameras work like regular ones, except that the image sensor detects invisible IR light and it is translated to a visual “thermogram”. This is what you see through the creature’s perspective views in The Predator and Prey. I assume this is a general policy for all Topdon devices and not everything applies to the TC001. That being said, after accepting the aforementioned policies, I was asked for access to the camera and media, which makes sense, followed by the request that I connect the thermal camera. After attaching the module, the camera appeared as being connected and online (the side LED also started shining blue). Installing the app. The Mobile Application

How much does the USB port speed actually matter? In reality, not much. The thermal images do not have a large file size, even if they contain all the radiometric thermal data. So in the end, even a USB 1.1 will not slow you down very much. But the fact that now we have Type-C connectors helps for faster charging and an easier to use USB port. Another interesting point to be made in favor of the modular thermal cameras is that they don’t use their own display which may be outdated or small. Instead, you get to enjoy the entire screen of your smartphone. The Conclusion Getting your hands on the best thermal imaging camera is like seeing into the future. An indispensable tool for chasing pesky draughts, underperforming insulation, or thermal bridging, they really do show you an invisible world of infrared heat. Types of IR Cameras The Flir One Gen 3 is the largest of the thermal cameras I looked at; it’s about 2.6 inches wide and 1.3 inches tall, and it fits a lot into that space, including a built-in battery and two cameras. It is also the most complex of the cameras I looked at. This large camera body has rounded edges and two rubber grips on the side and a USB-C plug on the top that fits into the USB-C port (the iOS-ready version has a Lightning plug), which is the only thing holding it in place. There are two main types of thermal imaging cameras. Handheld devices that look vaguely like guns come with a trigger and screen, whilst plug-in camera devices connect directly to a smartphone or tablet. IR Resolution

Flir TG165-X

The TG165-X has a thermal sensor that provides a very high thermal accuracy of +/- 1.5 ° C which is higher than what more than 90% of the infrared cameras on the market offer. It is also very sensitive to temperature differences because it has a thermal sensitivity of 0.07 C. The thermal scope is wide too because this camera can measure any temperature from -13°F to 572°F (-25°C to 300°C). It is similar to the flir one pro camera in some ways. However, it has a higher resolution of 320 x 240 pixels. It has a thermal sensor that relies on a mobile phone`s camera to show images. It can spot heat signature up to 1800 feet. The thermal sensor of this device is very high. In fact, higher than the majority of most infrared cameras. It is very sensitive to temperature changes. It can measure high temperatures because of its high-temperature range that is at -25 degrees-300 degrees. EASIER TO READ greater detail and accuracy with improved 320 x 240 resolution. This is the professional quality IR Infrared Thermal Imager used for home inspections, fire fighting, farming, electronics manufacturing, studying traffic, archaeology, and any other business, hobby, or science where accurate to 2.5 ℉ temperature readings are required.

Which one of these USB thermal cameras is right for me?If you are a hobbyist or just looking to buy your first thermal camera, it makes sense for you to buy the Flir One Pro or the Seek Thermal CompactPro or their low-budget counterparts because of the lower cost. But if you are an inspector or you use it professionally on a daily or weekly basis, it makes sense to buy a separate handheld USB thermal camera, so you don’t depend on your phone to provide the battery life and risk damaging it because the enclosures are not well protected on those. One aside point about power consumption is that at the point you insert the camera into the phone, it starts to draw power, even if the app isn’t running. Therefore, we wouldn’t recommend leaving the camera connected after you’ve used it. On the top edge is a USB-C prong to connect to the phone, and Apple users have a special version that goes into their proprietary connector. Note: the older CAT S61, still available in places, had a lower resolution IR camera, but offered laser measuring, offering an alternative with even more flexibility.Combined with its 15Hz refresh rate (many are only 9Hz), it can easily be used to spot animals or people in the dark, or through dense foliage. There’s also a 300-lumen LED light, should you want to surprise someone you’ve spotted in the dark. The simple menu system provides access to other useful features too, such as Level and Span adjustments (a little like manual exposure, allowing you to isolate a thermal range), and Emissivity adjustments (manual or pre-sets). Both versions have a 3-inch touchscreen and can store around 500 images onboard to transfer via Micro USB. The ability to type notes via a touch keyboard can be handy, too. If you can stretch to it, the FLIR C5 model adds more analysis features and Wi-Fi so you can get images to your phone and to your software. How come its competitors are limited in this regard? The thermal cameras that are made in the US can be exported without a license as long as they has the frame rate less or equal to 9Hz. Since both Topdon and AGM are built outside the US, they can push the refresh rate a lot higher and it shows. I have captured a video of both AGM Glory Pro and the Topdon TC001 side by side (sort of) and the result was interesting. Apparently, the reason for that is the continuous calibration of the sensors and it seems to be normal for module-type thermal cameras. Now let’s talk about the accuracy of the temperature. Topdon says that the maximum temperature variance can be 2 degrees C, down to 0.1 C, while the potential thermal error should be less than 1.8 F if the target temperature is below 212 degrees F. I didn’t have an instrument which I could trust to be perfectly accurate, just the AGM Glory Pro to compare its results. Left: AGM Glory Pro. Right: TC001.

For the best high-definition images look for units with a high IR resolution, a large temperature scale, and low thermal sensitivity. Fans of junk food television will have seen these thermal cameras heavily used by people pretending to hunt ghosts in abandoned buildings, or their uses for military thrillers, or as said before, for capturing nightlife in nature documentaries. Thermal imaging usually displays the image in a range of blues, greens, oranges, yellows, and reds, though some cameras simply do a grayscale correction, or something similar. It has a temperature range of -40 degrees to 330 degrees. It is also available with either the Android USB-C. the MicroUSB or the lightning port. In terms of its temperature monitoring abilities, you’ll be glad to know it has a thermal scope from -40F° to 626°F (-40°C to 330°C), with a 0.07C sensitivity. Like the Flir, it comes with either an Android USB-C, microUSB or a Lightning port. The only significant problem with the camera is that 256 x 192 isn’t a high resolution, and other than presenting what’s hot and what’s not, it doesn’t offer much more help.
