The outsole of the Altra Lone Peak 6 is pretty unchanged from its predecessor and with good reason. The 40 4.4mm deep lugs are really well constructed and planned out. Canice: As mentioned before I would like to feel a bit more pop or spring under foot but this is subjective and each person will have their own opinion. The Good The traction pattern is similar to the likes of the Salomon Speedcross 5 multi-directional chevrons throughout the underside and enough spacing to allow mud to fall off the shoe rather than to cake onto it.

ALEX: The Altra Lone Peak 6 may be my favorite Lone Peak yet. This iconic shoe just keeps getting better. The primary update from the previous version is in the form of changes to the forefoot upper and lacing system, with slight modifications to the overlays, including toe protection. They didn’t mess with the sole (or soul), and I am super pumped about that. Make sure to adjust slowly to a zero drop shoe if this is your first experience. Failure to do so can lead to lower leg issues and overuse injuries. The stitched rand on the toebox is pliable to the touch, which helps keep the forefoot comfortable on long days while providing a little protection for toe bumps. I prefer a little more protection on the toes, but understand the reason for going with a softer material here. The width up front is traditional Altra, with a very slight volume reduction over previous versions. Like so many of Altra’s shoes, the Lone Peak has undergone many revisions over the years (and additions; they now offer waterproof and mid-cut versions). However, the current Lone Peak 6 has a few significant updates that may change the feel and appropriate usage of the shoe altogether. The Lone Peak was the pioneer of their brand. The true OG. It is one of the few that is reminiscent, almost unchanged, over ten iterations! A good portion of Altra’s cult following (that we often refer to) goes right for this shoe.

Fit/Feel/Comfort

Canice: The outsole has good traction on dry technical terrain like we have here in Park City, UT. It suffers a bit in wet sloppy stuff but in general works well. Dom: The first thing that I noticed was the more modern and stripped-down upper. The lighter upper of the LP6 results in a useful weight reduction compared to the outgoing LP5. (Drop in US M10 was 26 g per shoe, almost exactly an ounce lighter) Canice: The Lone Peak 6 is a nicely improved iteration of a now classic distance trail running shoe. The upper and mid foot hold are the stand out stars of the LP6 and the midsole and outsole get the job done.

Canice: What really stands out to me is that my foot is held in place much better than the previous iterations and this means I can now enjoy the extra room up front as opposed to my foot sliding forward and bashing my toes on technical descents. The fit used to feel a bit sloppy but now I feel secure and confident when side sloping and going for my downhill PR. When a mainstay like the Lone Peak comes out with a new version, the biggest concern is whether or not they messed with a good thing. TAYLOR: The Lone Peak series has a great following, and for a good reason. A very natural running feel is what you’ll get from top to bottom. There is a lot of room for natural foot splay and placement, minimal cushion, and solid grip for various terrain. In some ways, it simply feels like an extension of your foot. Being a usability-led shoe brand, Altra often has a few nice features in its shoes. Here it’s the velcro gaiter attachment on the heel, which helps you really waterproof your runs alongside the lacing attachment on the forefoot.

The 6.0 is coming in a bit larger than its predecessors, so if you were a size 10 in the Lone Peak 5.0 , there’s a chance you might have to drop to a 9.5 in the Lone Peak 6.0. JARRETT: The Lone Peak 6 are my first Altra trail shoes, and they are definitely staying in the rotation. It’s a shame the vehicular Gods didn’t want me out on the trails, but getting hit by a snow/ice storm still gave me some excellent test conditions.
