About this deal

Following a global apocalypse, humanity is forced to take shelter and in the inhospitable Antarctic. Ooh I love a dystopian thriller and books that make me think about the ways in which we are messing up the planet. This science fiction novel focusing on the aftermath of an alien invasion is a departure from Tom Rob Smith’s earlier four novels, which were thrillers. At times this almost felt like the story was verging on a horror story but with the obvious sci-fi leaning.

The aliens only appear at the beginning of the novel where they inform the population of earth that they have a short time to relocate to Antarctica or they will be destroyed. If you like world building, odysseys and obstacles, or just want to read a book before it is sure to become a great movie, Cold People is for you! However, it is humanity through the eyes of individuals, rather than the response from governments and countries, which seems lacking. You might think the rest of this novel might have something to do with the aliens, but they turn out to be an extravagant deus ex machina for what Smith really wants to explore. My thanks to the publisher for supplying me with an advance copy of the book for the purpose of review.

The planet’s population is given 30 days to relocate to Antarctica, which will become a vast reservation for the remnants of the species; there they will either die out or adapt, depending on their willingness to work together. The 103 third parties who use cookies on this service do so for their purposes of displaying and measuring personalized ads, generating audience insights, and developing and improving products. But the alien overlords are not the focus of Smith’s interest here; they are no more than a device to effect this revolutionary reinvention not only of human society, but of humanity itself. Again I was impressed by the imagination that Smith brings to bear on the conceptualisation of the various hybrids that scientists working in the “capital city” at McMurdo station have engineered. The book moves through several POVs which was interesting - but a little hard to keep track of the timeline with each. I was heavily invested in the characters from the beginning and it was just as interesting learning about their pasts, as it was their current journeys.
