In this episode of our COP26 series, Chris (@donohohoho) talks to Prof. Louise Horsfall (@lehorsfall), Chair of Sustainable Biotechnology at the University of Edinburgh, about her experience attending COP26 in Glasgow. We get to hear about her experience as a scientist hearing the sometimes conflicting ideas of politicians and companies. Prof. Horsfall also talks about how her lab uses engineered microbes to recycle metals from battery waste. It's got a UVB CCFL (cold cathode fluorescent lamp) which replicates the sun's natural output, and the LED light panel gives off the same colour temp and high PAR value (whatever that is when it's at home) of the natural sunlight spectrum.

We hear about her work on sending microbes to space to mine precious metals from asteroids. She then discusses the potential—and current limitations—of sending microbes to space. In this episode Neelakshi talks to Dr. Sandy Hetherington about the work in plant paleobotany and evolution. The sustainable growing systems by Interstellar Lab aim to better life on Earth, allowing durable farming while preserving its biodiversity, and then prepare humanity to settle on other planets. The work is a fusion of architecture, agronomy, engineering, product design, and life-sciences. And, as such, it demands a highly skilled team. Installed in Ivry-Sur-Seine, the French-American startup has harnessed talents and expertise from NASA, Space X, Trimble, Airbus, and Dassault Systemes, including scientists, engineers, and architects like Jim Rhoné.
