In 2023, she was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature. [17] Selected bibliography [ edit ] Lawrence is a contributor to the 2019 anthology New Daughters of Africa, edited by Margaret Busby. [15] This novel fell flat. It began with such urgency - throwing me straight into a great mystery-esque set up that I couldn't wait to follow. But then Patrice Lawrence did the unforgivable and just threw the mystery out the window. I'm frustrated. My English teacher made everyone go to library and choose a book and this book was on display. Two emotions I had

The story follows, Marlon, a young man whose brother was involved in street gangs until an accident several years ago changed everything. Marlon promised his mum he'd stay in school and avoid his brother's old life, but when old feuds reemerge and his family and friends are threatened, it's not quite so easy to keep his promise.

Aside from some scenes at the beginning of the novel, romance is mostly absent from the story and I enjoyed this hugely. It was refreshing to see another YA book (This Savage Song, I'm looking at you) with little romantic interaction and I'm a fan of novels that don't feel the need to include it at all. If a book foregoes romance to focus instead on strong friendships - which was exactly what Orangeboy did - and explores these friendships in detail, chances are I'm going to be 100% on board. One of the main friendships in Orangeboy could have easily become a romantic relationship, but I'm so glad it didn't because that could have undermined the friendship itself. What a book! Such a gripping, gritty storyline, with such wonderful, believable characters. Loved it.” Tanya Landman, author of Buffalo Soldier Orangeboy (Hodder Children's Books, 2016, ISBN 978-1444927207. Also available as an audiobook, narrated by Ben Bailey Smith. [18]

Danuta Kean, "Waterstones children's prize shortlists reflect readers' search for hope in anxious times", The Guardian, 8 February 2017. This book is so important. Not only is it full of diverse characters, but it explores a life of gang violence that many young people in London fall into and find it incredibly hard to escape. and I've never read anything like it.In the Urban Dictionary, Orange Boy is an insult used to offend someone who goes against a cause they used to stand by - the story of Milo as he ventures away from the boy he used to be to the man he must become to survive is perilous, and full of pitfalls that tiptoe along the line of morality. When family ties are stretched thin, right and wrong is a blurred, inconstant dichotomy. As the story hurtles towards its conclusion, the tangled lives of the brothers screech to an end that doesn't allow anyone off easily, it's a truthful and powerful story that is much needed in the UK YA scene. The emotional ride: edge-of-your-seat stuff. It’s easy to feel for Marlon from the beginning. I think having the first scene be what is so clearly a first date makes him so vulnerable that we readers easily identify with him and see what a fish out of water he is when everything starts getting serious. The Orange Boy appears to be some type of crustacean with big flaps for limbs. As the name suggests, the Orange Boy's shell is a bright orange color with yellow beige skin underneath. But when a mysterious tragedy strikes, Marlon is determined to reveal the chain that links him to the criminal underworld. He starts getting the wrong sort of attention, as investigations tangle him into a web of gangs.
