Rodman, Sarah (December 9, 2015). "Dan Auerbach's career takes new Arcs". The Boston Globe. Archived from the original on October 23, 2021 . Retrieved October 23, 2021. This winter I decided that [Silver Jews] were too small of a force to ever come close to undoing a millionth of all the harm he has caused… Previously I thought through songs and poems and drawings I could find and build a refuge away from his world, but there is the matter of Justice. And I'll tell you it's not just a metaphor. The desire for it actually burns. It hurts. There needs to be something more. [92] Sheffield, Rob (August 8, 2019). "Remembering David Berman's Wild Kindness". Rolling Stone. Archived from the original on January 20, 2021 . Retrieved April 2, 2021. A number of musicians referenced and/or paid tribute to Berman in albums: The Avalanches and Cassandra Jenkins quoted Berman. [204] Fleet Foxes and Mogwai memorialized Berman on their respective songs " Sunblind" and " Ritchie Sacramento". [205] Callahan described his and Oldham's collaborative album Blind Date Party as "all of Drag City coming together for David". [117] The Mountain Goats dedicated their song " Arguing With the Ghost of Peter Laughner About His Coney Island Baby Review" to Berman. [206] Daniel Blumberg and John Vanderslice dedicated their respective works On&On and I can't believe civilization is still going here in 2021! Congratulations to all of us, Love DCB to Berman. [207] First Aid Kit released a new song, "Strange Beauty" along with their cover of the Silver Jews' "Random Rules". [208] Brinn, David (August 8, 2019). I’ve always strained to hit acceptable notes, and those just don’t sound right coming out of my mouth. What I’ve always admired about your voice—beyond the pleasure I take in listening to it—is how well it suits what it expresses. You know your range, and it’s one I didn’t know existed before, and it’s opened space for that range to exist in the wider world. I think this is true of your writing as well—you make choices within a different range of what had before seemed reality. Those choices shifted my perception of what’s happening and what’s possible. It’s a kind of make-believe that has helped make the real world more real. But do you think that wasn’t enough to keep you going as an artist? You needed something more directly connected with your life? Poetry Society of America (2003). "New American Poets: David Berman". Poetry Society of America. Archived from the original on November 8, 2020 . Retrieved March 13, 2021. David Berman was born January 4, 1967 in Williamsburg, Virginia. He attended high school at Greenhill School in Addison, Texas, before matriculating at the University of Virginia. While in Charlottesville, Virginia, Berman began writing and performing songs (often left on friends' voice message machines) with his loose band, Ectoslavia, primarily composed of UVA classmates Stephen Malkmus and Bob Nastanovich. Reflecting upon his suicide attempt, five years later, Berman noted that he was not unprivileged and without career opportunities, although this was not evident to him at the time. [78] He began to excessively take antidepressants, and his sobriety made him more receptive to candidness. [79] In 2005, and by means of " saving [himself]", Silver Jews, with a lineup including Cassie, Malkmus, Nastanovich, Bobby Bare Jr., Paz Lenchantin, and William Tyler, released Tanglewood Numbers. [80] Soon after, the band began to tour, with 100 shows from 2006 to 2009 taking place; to cope with the hectic nature, he became "a daily pot smoker". [81] Before Berman toured, he occasionally made caricatures of fans, considering them more rewarding. [59]

David Berman: Starlite Walker and part of Natural Bridge were written when he was at large in my life. And then an abyss opened up like they tend to do daily now. I felt like a friend had died, but I never knew him. I did live with his voice and words though. I lived with them all of my adult life. Over and over again his music and poetry made meaning for me and comforted me and made me laugh and made me sad and made me look at the objects and people and situations of this world in a new light.
