Since his other work is coming up, I’ll just add my 2 cents on Miller’s oeuvre: I think he peaked with his first Daredevil run. I felt much more like a junior partner with Geof Darrow in most of my collaborations, because his point of view was so distinct that he dominates.

With a mere 128 pages this covers a lot of the themes that the dystopian sci-fi genre loves so much: the downfall of humanity, the playing-God aspect of science, questions of power and hierarchy within a world where cyborgs are as integrated as their fleshier versions. It’s a musical thing – melodies and rhythms that push the narrative against the pull of the heavy visual bludgeoning. Even given that “Gotham City in flames” is the “it’s Tuesday” of the 21st century Bat-books, the apocalypse at the climax still had some punch.Unit Four is the ultimate robot killing machine and the last hope of the future's enslaved mechanical servants. We're used to seeing Miller take both writing and art roles, creating gritty noir stories that are spare and earthy, bathed in little more than light and shade. Barbara's robot revolution fails, and she commits suicide by hooking up to a generator and overloading her own circuits. I know I saw Morgan Freeman in The Electric Company, because I watched it when I was a kid, but this was the first movie of his I’d seen.

Miller’s got those credits and Darrow also is widely considered one of the great artists of his generation, and the third big brain on the Matrix films, which he helped the Wachowskis design. Miller continues this juxtaposition of horrific violence with uncomfortable humor throughout the comic.

Even just on the shelf, next to other comics Hard Boiled dominated and bullied its way into your hands.She claims Carl is the revolution's only hope, being the only robot powerful enough to stand up to Willeford's paramilitary security forces.

Story: Set in a bleak dystopian future, Hard Boiled operates in a world of excess and depravity reflected down from its heartless corporate domination.Miller and Darrow’s story is drenched in blood, true, and we’re lost for much of it, as we have no idea who Nixon (or Carl Seltz, or Harry Seltz, or Harry Burns) is or what he’s doing.
