The Nowa Huta district was completely empty before Poland fell behind the Iron Curtain and was forced under communist rule after WWII, so it was a clean slate to build upon. Other than being told by friends and family that the sausages on Hala Tragowa at night were the best in Krakow, I only ever saw anything about them on Krakow’s Free Walking Tour Hidden Gems list. Update for the 2017 season in Zakopane: Looks like the ice maze in Zakopane and castle have both been re-built for this year as well!

Unfortunately- many of our videos for this were created in 2017 using Vine (RIP) so that is why they do not play properly…. Today, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site where you can marvel over the cavernous chambers, statues, chapels, chandeliers, and cathedrals — all carved out of salt and stone by the miners! After moving here, I started stumbling upon the same graffiti imagery all over the city — A reverse merman with a but. During my travels in Poland, I stayed a total of four days in Kraków; two days at the beginning of my trip and two days towards the end of my trip. krakow on Instagram or TikTok If you’re walking through the outer courtyard of Wawel Castle, you may notice a bright spot among the cold, mostly gray, winter skyline. Wojciecha in Polish, is a tiny chapel that sits in the heart of the Old Town at the intersection of Ulica Grodzka and Rynek Główny. Off of the Main Market Square you will find Ulica Grodzka (Grodzka Street), which if you follow it, will lead you to Wawel Castle. When we first wrote this article almost a decade ago- a good breakfast was sometimes hard to find in Krakow! The intricate altar underwent major restoration work in Poland and was put back in its place at the Basilica 10 years later.

Over 25% of the population here are students, which has led to Krakow becoming a hub for cheap food, cheap booze, and abundant bars and clubs. Hour-long guided tours cost 15 PLN, though you can do a self-guided tour on Wednesdays for free between 1:30-4pm. But since the fall of communism in the 1990s, and when it came under the spotlight of Steven Spielberg’s movie Schindler’s List, it has once again transformed into a buzzing, bohemian neighbourhood packed with bars, cafes and historic sights – the Remuh Synagogue traces its roots back to the 1550s; the Galicia Jewish Museum chronicles the sobering history of Polish Jews. Katedra Wawelska and Zamek Królewski na Wawelu sit on top of Wawel Hill at the end of Ulica Grodzka on the left bank of the Vistula River and have a commanding view over all of Kraków.

It’s a great way to get the lay of the land and learn about the culture, people, and history of the destination. I will focus on the local nooks and crannies of this city, and hopefully, you will find a thing or two you wouldn’t otherwise have stumbled upon.
