About this deal

Oh My God, What a Complete Aisling is set to ‘ramp up’ for its fifth and final book, as the authors said they want to end on a high.

The follow-up to the hugely successful fiction novel 'Oh My God, What A Complete Aisling' has been released in stores in Ireland. The final Aisling book, Aisling Ever After, is an homage to all she’s been through. It details not only how far Aisling has come but, in a way, how far we’ve all come.' Motherhood rears its head, too, as Aisling and her friends each try to figure out how they might engage with the narrow template of job-marriage-children that women in their 30s are often faced with. Mercifully, the Aisling series gives us many nonjudgmental and alternative options. The message remains an empowering one: be yourself, find your joy, and the other stuff will find you. Emer said: “One thing that often happens is we get pictures of people reading it by the pool in places like Tenerife and Leo Varadkar in Vegas.”Well, it’s not exactly on the horizon for us, is it? I’m twenty-nine and you’re only twenty-eight. You’d be a child bride by today’s standards,” he adds with a hollow laugh, spraying toast crumbs onto the white linen tablecloth. Then I had some mental health struggles like feeling the pressure of having to produce another book and really struggling with it. Fun, entertaining and, at times, a bit emotional, Oh My God, What a Complete Aisling is a fast-paced, funny read which I really didn't want to put down! Oh My God, What a Complete Aisling was released last year and has already found a place in common parlance and Irish culture. Even if they don't know the Aisling of the novel, they certainly know an Aisling. We all do in Ireland. If you don't know an Aisling, it is because you are an Aisling. She's from outside Dublin and goes "down home" at weekends, is going steady with a long-term boyfriend from her hometown and walks to work in trainers (to get her steps in) while carrying her court shoes in a Brown Thomas bag.

The synopsis reads: “With her café BallyGoBrunch flying and the door firmly closed on her relationship with John, an unexpected job offer sees Aisling boarding a business-class flight to New York in her best wrap dress and heels. As she finds her feet in the Big Apple, she throws herself into the dating game, grapples with ‘always-on’ work culture, forges and fights for new friendships, and brings her good wedges to a party in the Hamptons (much to Sadhbh’s dismay). Beside me, John is horsing into the contents of his second trip to the buffet. He looks so cute that I can’t stop myself reaching out and squeezing his hand affectionately. His plain white T-shirt is inside out, I’ve just noticed – the big gom. He looks up from his sausage sandwich and raises his eyebrows quizzically. And we said listen, all the best things come to an end…and we said we’d rather go out on a high than to drag it along after us.”

McMansions and men

Oh my God, What a Complete Aisling is an almost-but-not-quite satire. It began life as a Facebook group, run by its two authors, Emer McLysaght and Sarah Breen, and riffing off the Aislings of this world: a girl from rural Ireland who has “never dyed her hair”, “carries her court shoes to work in a bag” and harbours a deep suspicion of sushi (“the price of it for something that’s not even cooked. I ask you.”) At 12.31, we’re pulling out of the driveway, the atmosphere between us in the car a little warmer than in the diningroom, but there’s still a strange tension, hanging around like a ferocious smell. Emer McLysaght on her comfort reads, favourite Irish author and the toughest part of writing OMGWACA". VIP Magazine. 14 December 2020. I'm not an Aisling, but I'd like to be." This statement is hollered over the noise of a busy Dublin brunch spot as I sit with a group of women, all of whom have read Emer McLysaght and Sarah Breen's novel Oh My God, What a Complete Aisling, and all of whom have a sense of ownership over the title character. As author John Boyne has said: "Aisling is the real Voice of Ireland. "

This is an edited extract from Oh My God, What A Complete Aisling: The Novel by Emer McLysaght and Sarah Breen, published by Gill Books ( €14.99)Emer McLysaght and Sarah Breen, authors of Oh My God, What A Complete Aisling and The Importance of Being Aisling Beware: you will laugh out loud whilst reading Oh My God, What a Complete Aisling. I tittered, chortled and guffawed all of the way through it but there are some serious notes which makes it scarily true to life. So (to quote Monty Python) even though this book makes you look on the bright side of life, it reminds us that sometimes life is a piece of shit, when you look at it...
